GRYC Youth Program
Information Sheet - Summer 2010
About the Program
The GRYC sailing camp is a busy, fun-filled, outdoor day focused on sailing instruction, aquatic games and camp activities. Please read this information sheet carefully as there have been some significant changes to the program. Arrival and boat rigging begin at 9 am. Morning instruction takes place from 9 am to 12 noon, lunch is supervised and includes games. Afternoon classes run from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Child care is offered from 8:00 - 9:00 am and from 4:00 - 5:00 pm at an additional cost of $100 per two week session.
Sailing Instruction and Swimming Activities:
Canadian Yachting Association certifications are the standards used at the GRYC. Sailing levels include White Sail I, II & III; Bronze IV & V.
During a typical camp day, sailing sessions are interspersed with land games, crafts, aquatic games, free swim and water safety activities. Regardless of swimming competence all campers wear life jackets while in the boats. Swimming levels are tested on the first day of camp and weak swimmers will be required to wear life jackets for all aquatic activities. The GRYC is not recommended for non-swimmers. Water safety is a priority. All children are expected to adhere to the safety rules presented by camp staff.
Ages/Eligibility:
Children, ages 9-16 (as of Sept. 30, 2010). Swimming level should be the equivalent of Level 6 in the Red Cross swimming program or Level 3 in the Royal life program.

Hours of Supervision:
Participants under 14 years of age must be dropped off and picked up by a parent/adult (over 16) and signed in/out at the Clubhouse. Scheduled activity hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Supervision is available from 8:00 - 9:00 am and 4:00 - 5:00 pm for those children that require it for an additional cost of $100 per two week session.
The Instructors/Supervisors:
We employ fully qualified sailing instructors with NLS water safety certification.
This season, GRYC Youth Programs will be supervised by a Program Manager, bringing a greater level of experience to and support for Sailing Camp staff.
Swimming instruction will not be offered. Instead, sailing sessions will be interspersed with fun-filled outdoor island games, crafts, aquatic games, free swim and water safety activities.
WHITE SAIL I, II and III: White Sail levels run from Monday to Friday for 2 weeks.
Fees: $350/session for GRYC Members, $460/session for Non-members
- Session #1 June 28 - July 9
- Session #2 July 12 - July 23
- Session #3 July 26 - August 6
- Session #4 August 9 - August 20
BRONZE SAIL IV and V:
Due to demand, Bronze now can be completed in two or three, 2 week Sessions. Splitting Sessions up will likely require more than 4 weeks to complete Bronze, because of review required between Sessions.
Last year the GRYC sent a team of Bronze sailors to The Fruit Bowl at the Hudson Yacht Club. This is a highly recommended, but not required activity for participants in the Bronze program. It runs from July 22 - 25th and requires parent volunteers to coordinate trailers for boats, to camp with the GRYC team, and to coordinate and oversee various other details. There are additional costs associated with this event. Last year the entry fee was $150 per person which included 2 days of clinics, lunch on all four days, plus dinner on Saturday.
In order to promote racing experience, classes are held on the Sunday of two race weekends, therefore on two weekdays per session there will be no lessons for Bronze sailors. Session dates have been carefully selected to coincide with scheduled events such as GRYC Race Series and The GRYC Regatta. For schedule see Youth Program Sessions.
On Sunday, March 21, 2010 at 10 am, camp registration will open to non GRYC members. To register, leave your completed registration package in the drop off box located at the foot of the driveway at 39 ch Summerlea, (note, drop off no longer at 19 Summerlea)
