The Gatineau River Yacht Club set the table for a full day of activities at its annual Invitational Regatta on July 30, with racing from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by the traditional barbeque.

The sun and the winds were strong that day, making for an exciting series of races in a number of boat classes.

In the Laser (senior) class, Bill Fuller from Briannia Yacht Club finished first, with clubmates Sam Fuller and Andrew Furey taking second and third, respectively.

In the Junior Radial Laser class, Warren Place from the host club sailed to victory, ahead of Callum Smith from the Nepean Sailing Club.

In the Senior Radial Laser class, GRYC sailors Paul Place and Emilie MacFie were 1-2, respectively, with Mark McGugan of the Nepean club crossing the line third.

Nepean teams swept the Albacore class, with Club Rae-Anne Norwood and Warner Monterio first, Kerri Weller and Paul Van Leeuwen second, and Simon Igici and Mary-Catherine Doran third.

GRYC teams fared well in the Cabin Boat races, with Marc Ranger and Yus Deshares striking gold, John and Janey Crook earning silver, and David and Suzy Newing winning bronze.

Following a full day of racing, sailors retired to the clubhouse patio for an extended evening of swimming, barbecued delights, refreshing beverages and family fun.

The GRYC has a number of upcoming events, including a benefit BBQ for UNICEF Famine Relief with funds going toward famine relief in East Africa.

The fundraising event takes place at the GRYC on Aug. 3 in Chelsea.
