  1. Bridge Up - Saturday, October 18, 10:00 am start, rain or shine
The annual Fall close-up "Bridge Up" will take place this coming Saturday, rain or shine, and goes until the work is done. Lunch will be provided for all participants. All members are strongly encouraged to participate. There is a lot of work to be done that day and "many hands make light work". We look forward to seeing you there.

  2. Move Boats
One of the tasks at Bridge Up is moving the Island Docks and tying them up to the first few Finger Docks along the Catwalk. Therefore on Saturday, any boats still moored on Island Docks and in the first 4 Finger Docks (1A to 4A) will be moved to another location. To ensure safe removal of these boats, it is preferable that the boat owner move their boat in time for Bridge Up. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were 5 boats moored at the Island Docks and 7 boats in the Finger Docks spaces 1A to 4A. There were 6 empty mooring spaces at the Finger Docks 4B and up.

  3. Last Sunday's "Le Gel" River Cruise
It was a glorious day for the "Le Gel" River Cruise with perfect winds. In all, eight boats participated in a cruise up to Banana Island where they set anchor they enjoyed some late-season festivities.

  4. Club Closed after Bridge Up
Note that after this weekend, the Club facilities are officially closed. If you need access, please contact a Board Member to make the necessary arrangements for access. The boat ramp gate will remain unlocked until the end of October.

  5. Volunteer Log
The Volunteer Log Book is kept outside the office and will remain there until the end of Bridge Up. Note that it is your responsibility to record volunteer contributions to the club in the Volunteer Log Book.

  6. Annual General Meeting
A reminder that the GRYC Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 7:30 pm at the Larrimac Golf Club. More details will follow closer to the date.

  7. Lost Tiley
Marian has lost a Tiley hat, probably on the Island. If somebody has found it please send him an e-mail mkupczyn@uottawa.camkupczyn@uottawa.ca so he can pick it up or bring it to the Bridge Up.

  8. End of Weekly GRYC Communications
This will be the last issue of the weekly GRYC Communications for the 2008 season. Until the end of the 2008 year which closes at the AGM, the GRYC Communications will be issued on a special notice basis.

Join other big boats, dinghies, canoes and kayaks as we sail/paddle up the river enjoying the amazing weather and soaking in the stunning views the Gatineau River has to offer. Hope to see you there!

  2. Last Week's GRYC Awards Banquet and Dance
The 2008 GRYC Awards Banquet and Dance took place at the Club last Saturday. The food, prepared by "Boulangerie dans un Village" was delicious, and the "Lost Highway" rocked the house! 1. Last Weekend's Final GRYC Races
A strong showing of ten sailors braved the Fall weather to enjoy the last dinghy races in the Frostbite Series. An what a contest it was... Doug Clancey grabbed a 1st in the 7th race of the Series, his tactical sailing was just enough to keep Warren Place from landing a tie as it was only this one point difference that separated Warren and Geoff Erskine, the eventual winner of the Frostbite Series.

This series was very much a family affair with lots junior sailors on the water, including some parent/child teams. GRYC junior sailors in this series included Zoe Rogers, Tyler & Cal Gray, Sam & Paul Place, Gabriel Gingras, Sophie Wolvin many making all of the races in the series.

In the Roaring Fourties, the last Big Boat race of the season, Dave Newing and and his crew of Suzy and Greg overcame some technical difficulties at the start line and gained a lead sufficient enough to hold on to the win after the "corrected times" were calculated. Kudos to Stephen Woodley, and Dave Maitland as crew, for a strong 2nd place finish. The Big Boat series of six races this season was won by David Newing with Neil Rask placing second and Bernie Applebaum placing third.

Thank you to John Crook, Kate Stefanuk and the Hennessey family for operating the Crash Boats and to Janey Crook, Rebecca Renner, and Christine Vanhove for managing Point Duty. All of the race results for the season are available on the web site.

  2. GRYC Fall Colors Paddle
The rain held off and the fall colours were spectacular along the Gatineau River. In this setting, the "Festival La Grande Descente de la Gatineau" descended upon the GRYC this past Saturday! While our GRYC paddlers were few, the river festival itself attracted over 200 registered paddlers. For this 2nd annual event, the GRYC once again provided a rest-stop for the recreational paddlers, paddling from Wakefield to the dam. The docks and the back deck were a busy place (see photos posted). It was truly spectacular to see so many non-motorized boats on the Gatineau River.

While the festival organizers provided a couple of volunteers at the GRYC to prepare and serve soup & hot chocolate, our own GRYC volunteers really rose to the occasion acting as hosts, helping boaters dock and then 'portage over the catwalk' and assisting where needed. The River Festival organizers greatly appreciate and recognize the GRYC contribution to the success of their event. Special thanks to John Cockell, Fiona Hennessy, Erik Rask, Mariam Kupczynski and Christine Vanhove for their enthusiastic assistance on Saturday.

  3. Volunteer Log
Please note that it is a member's responsibility to record volunteer contributions to the club in the Volunteer Log Book. The Volunteer Log Book is kept outside the office and will remain there until Bridge-Up. Please contact the Club Manager at manager@gryc.ca or any member of the Board if you have any questions.

  4. Future GRYC Events

  1. GRYC Fall Colors Paddle - Saturday September 27
The GRYC Fall Colors paddle from Wakefield to the GRYC is this Saturday. Meet at Wakefield train (turn-about) parking area to unload your boat at 8:30 am. Drive your car back to GRYC and drivers will shuttle you back to Wakefield (someone will keep watch on your boat). If you do not need the shuttle service because you already have someone to drive your car back, you do not need to be at Wakefield until 9:00 am. We will depart Wakefield at 9:30 sharp for a leisurely paddle (with the current) home to the GRYC. If there is interest we will consider having hotdogs/hamburgers available for a nominal cost upon arrival back at the club.

Let Patti Goodman know at commordore@gryc.ca if you plan to participate, so we know whether to wait/look for you on Saturday morning, and if you need a shuttle service. See you Saturday!

  3. Frostbite II Results
A great turnout of 13 boats, complete with junior sailors, new sailors and the regular salty old dogs made for a very fun 2nd race in the Frostbite series. It was quite exciting with strong but shifty winds creating regular changes in the lead and wild finishes in each of the three races. Congratulation to Doug Clancey for winning this series. See complete Race Results on the GRYC web site. Thank you to our Crash Boat operators Bruce Lorimer, Kate Stefanuk and Neil Rask and to Point Duty Stephen Woodley & Marian Kupczynski.

  4. Happy 46th Birthday GRYC & Sail-O-Rama
What a great weekend for summer to finally arrive! Sail-0-Rama was blessed with sun, moments of good wind and lots of keen participants. Close to 50 people in 18 boats (big boats, dinghies, a canoe and possibly a kayak or two) sailed and/or paddled (or both) around the river while collecting cards to build a poker hand. Who knew there were so many card sharks at the GRYC! After some dealing and discarding, 3 winners (2 - 4 of a kind and a straight flush) were ultimately declared! Congratulations to all participants!

GRYC Jeopardy then challenged seven teams of young and old(er) members with skill-testing questions about sailing; boats; safety; GRYC history and Gatineau river geography. Some teams were more challenged then others! The game was won in the final round by the team of Jordan McGuire and Sabina Weber who came from behind to scoop victory by betting all their points and successfully answering the question of how many sailing vessels are in the GRYC-owned fleet.

Special thanks to Commodore Patty and Neil Rask, Neil also acted as Jeopardy host, for staging these events and to Dan Gray and David Newing for their input in designing and putting these events together.

Birthday cake, champagne, toasting and birthday singing in celebration of GRYC's 46th birthday added the final touch to an excellent afternoon. Thanks to Rear Commodore Casey and his crew of helpers.

  5. GRYC Awards Banquet
The annual GRYC Awards Banquet and Dance is fast-approaching. Don't miss this final year-end blow-out! The 2008 Banquet will be held Saturday, October 4 at the GRYC Clubhouse. Enjoy a fabulous dinner and dance the night away to Chelsea's own "Lost Highway". The cost is $30/person for GRYC members and $40/person for non-members. Reservations in advance only. No walks-in. Seating is limited so reserve today before the event sells out. For reservations, contact Casey Cerson at rearcommodore@gryc.ca.

This is also one of your last chances to earn some volunteer credits. The banquet can not go ahead without help from GRYC members. There are several opportunities to pitch-in on the day of the event. To volunteer, please contact the Rear Commodore.

  6. Volunteer Log
A reminder to all members that it is your responsibility to record your volunteer contributions to the club in the Volunteer Log Book. The Volunteer Log Book is kept by the public phone outside the office and will remain there until Bridge-Up. The Volunteer Log Book is the only source of information consulted in next year's registration process when assessing your volunteer contributions.

  7. Gatineau River Water Testing Results for August 23, 2008 - Excellent Results!
The third and final water testing for the 2008 summer season was conducted by Friends of the Gatineau river (FOG) on Saturday August 23rd. This series of test results, based on over 78 water samples taken from Farrellton to the Farmers Dam indicated that the Gatineau River is "excellent" or "good" quality recreational at all sites. Summer sunshine and high river volumes in the week preceding the tests resulted in a major improvement of water quality over tests earlier this summer. Present levels compare well to previous years.

In Chelsea, the water quality at the Farm Point Community public dock showed a "B", or 'good' rating. The Cascades Club water front, and the Burnet Road access point both tested "A", excellent as did the tests at the Gatineau River Yacht Club and the Tenaga Property Owners' Association Beach. You can see the results compiled by the Friends of the Gatineau River by downloading the PDF file from www.gryc.ca/News/Water_Quality_2008.pdf.

  8. Beyond GRYC Docks
Some of our GRYC sailors were active at other clubs this past weekend. Alex Felso represented GRYC at the Ottawa Valley Laser Masters Regatta held at Lac Deschenes Sailing Club competing in a very strong field, with quite windy conditions on Saturday. Masters racing is age based, with the minimum age being 35 (an Apprentice) up to Great Grand Masters who are 65 and over. To balance the field points are added to each of the younger groups, for example 3 points are added to each Apprentice finish, which makes for some very exciting announcement of race results.

A little farther up the Ottawa River members of the Place family (Warren, Sam & Paul) along with the Gray's (Tyler and Dan) were competing in the Open Regatta held at Kanata Sailing Club. The Albacore fleet had 18 boats, with some very neat "top of line product" and even a new "woody" in pristine condition. As for results, the St. James Town Sailing Club from Toronto owned the podium. However the weekend was much more about "just for fun" and good sportsmanship. Everyone was very cooperative helping each other load and move boats, and very socially too. Many of these sailors expressed interest in attending the next GRYC regatta and have invited us to their events. Travelling away from the island also made us realize just what a great facility we have at GRYC.

Five card stations will be placed around the river and you have to collect a card from each station. Registration and instructions are at noon, boats should be rigged and heading out by 1:00. (Note: if you are sailing a big boat, you may need a swimming crew member who can swim to retrieve the card if you cannot get close enough to the card station)

2:30 - 2:45 the 'dealer' will be available on the clubhouse deck at which point you and your crew members (if you have a crew) will decide if you want to 'hold' your hand or you may discard up to two cards and be dealt two new cards by the dealer.

2:50 - Show your hand! Judging and Prizes

3:00 pm - GRYC Jeopardy! Enter a team and test your knowledge in categories such as GRYC history; Island geography; sailing; boats; safety. Fun for all ages.

4:00 pm - Birthday Celebration - All members are welcome to join in to celebrate the club's 46th Birthday with Cake & Champagne! We look forward to seeing you all there!

  2. GRYC Fall Clubhouse Hours
After Labour Day, the club goes into the post-summer shoulder season. This means that the clubhouse and facilities will officially be open on weekends only with the Manager on duty at this time only.

However, if September turns into the summer we did not really have (hot and dry); we will make arrangements to have the clubhouse open on those good weather Fridays as well for those wishing to use the facilities for dinner on the Friday night. Please contact the Club Manager for special weekday requests at manager@gryc.ca

  3. Fall Colours Paddle - Note Date Change: Saturday, September 27
Mark your calendar now. The annual Fall Colours Paddle has been moved to Saturday, September 27th (10:00 am) to coincide with "La Grande Descente de la Gatineau", part of The Great Gatineau River Festival. More information coming soon. Visit: http://www.ladescente.ca. Volunteers are required on the island in the afternoon - contact the Club Manager at manager@gryc.ca to sign up.

  4. Race Volunteers Needed
We need more volunteers for this weekend's sailing activities and the next couple of weeks. For Race Officials, please contact Pat Curry at ryeo@travel-net.com or call 819 827-2953 and for Crash Boats please contact Todd Evans at todd@chelseafinancial.ca or call 819 827-5404. To see volunteer positions still needed, follow the Volunteering links on the GRYC web site home page.

  5. More Jobs
The end of the season is fast approaching. There are many volunteer opportunities still available to help you reach your volunteer quota for 2008. We currently require a volunteer to take home the lost and found clothing articles for a wash and dry. Once returned to the club any unclaimed items will be donated to a local Chelsea charity. If you like to tidy and organize we have just the volunteer opportunity for you.our infamous Tool Shed! Anyone who may have an affinity for tools and organization will relish this opportunity to clean and tidy the unruly tool shed. The successful candidate will have the undying gratitude of the Club Manager and of course the various member users of the tool shed. Finally we are looking for a group of individuals to help with righting and securing the windsurfing dock. Please contact Club Manager Rich Childs with your preferred opportunity and let's get the club ship shape before Bridge Down!

  6. Facilities Accomplishments
Thanks to Nancy Ruddell, and Jane and Keith Horner for their choice of a very splendid green for the exterior of the locker shed. Next in line is the windsurfer shed for which there remains plenty of paint/stain. Heather Gibb has done sterling duty on two of the picnic tables - the brush work is very fine. This is never ending job, so plenty of opportunities for other painters! Stephan Moreseli installed the buffer on the laser dock, and with a bit of fiddling this seems to be holding up. In the same vein, the crash buffer at the end of the squadron dock has seen plenty of action since being installed. Walker and Matt Tamblin have successfully beaver proofed a few trees. If someone sees a new nibble on a tree, the chicken wire is bedside the toolshed: the job only takes a few minutes. I am still looking for someone to do some branch lopping along Summerlea to make it easier for the grader to pass. - Giles

There are no other scheduled events this weekend.

  3. Junior Program Banquet
The Junior Program has wrapped up for another year with the end of year banquet held last Friday August 15. A great time was had by all as campers and their parents partied away the evening with great food (Lone Star Fajitas), a Scavenger hunt, awards, and a slide show. The JP program staff would like to thank the Youth committee for its support and any parents who stepped up to help us during the summer months.

  4. Moonlight Madness
What a magical event with the full moon, the Casino fireworks in the distance, boats with brightly coloured streamers and not a breath of wind. This was the setting for last Saturday's Moonlight Madness in which 9 boats participated. Several boats managed to complete the course although some with the aid of paddles or other means. John Crook was awarded the dinghy prize, Jos Woods the Big Boat prize and Michael Crook the Junior prize. Everyone enjoyed corn on the cob and hot chocolate afterwards. Thanks to the Fleet Captains for a great evening. Also, thanks to Suzy Newing for the pictures of the event posted on the GRYC website Communications page.

  5. Boat Sign-out
Just a reminder to please sign-out all boats prior to use. It is important to help us keep track of any potential problems of the club boats. Any issues with boats can then be properly tracked and addressed by our boson. Also, please remember to return paddles to their storage area underneath the clubhouse.

  6. A carpentry job
Someone to replace the short ramp from the main deck beside the BBQs. This is now dangerously rotted and needs removing entirely and replaced. Also the sailboarders might wish to collect a team to re-establish the wind surfer dock. Contact facilities at facilities@gryc.ca.

  2. GRYC Junior Program Banquet, Friday August 15
Calling all GRYC summer camp 2008 sailors (and parents). WOW, hard to believe that the summer of 2008 is coming to a close! The GRYC summer sailing camp of 2008 was again a smashing success. The kids had an awesome time learning to sail and participating in some new and old favourite activities & games like Ironman, Chicken Run and of course rock jumping.

What the end of camp does bring though is the annual "GRYC SUMMER SAILING CAMP BANQUET". This is the highlight of the summer with awards, games, prizes, skits, and a wonderful slideshow of the summer season. This event is being held on Friday August 15th at 6:30 pm at the GRYC clubhouse. This year we are planning to have a Tex/Mex theme including fajitas from LoneStar Café. The tickets for the banquet are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 8.

In order to prepare for this momentous event we need to know two things: 1. Are you planning on attending and if so how many meal tickets will you need? and 2. If you are attending would you be willing to volunteer to help with food prep, serving, and clean-up etc.

Please RSVP no later than Tuesday August 12th to manager@gryc.ca with your responses. Looking forward to seeing you all at the banquet.

  3. Moonlight Madness, Saturday August 16
The second annual modern day Moonlight Madness at the GRYC will be held on Saturday. Come sail under the full moon, and have a howling good time. The madness will commence at 9:00 p.m. with rigging getting underway at about 8:00 p.m (before it gets too dark). Corn on the cob and hot chocolate will be ready after the sail. Bring along a flashlight...glow lights will be provided for the sailors. Big Boats and dinghies are are all welcome. The course selection for Big Boats to be dependant on the winds, i.e. not with the dinghy's if the winds are strong like last year.

Note that this event is weather dependant - see the calendar on the GRYC home page for last minute changes. For any questions concerning the event please e-mail Geoff Erskine at starboard@gryc.ca.

  4. "Yo-Ho-Ho" Big Boat Race, Sunday August 17, 10:30 a.m.
Aargh Matey! Fourth in series of 6 races. Same as other Big Boat Races but with a Pirate theme. Dress up your crew and ship. Additional points for wardrobe creativity. Skippers' meeting will be held around 10:00 a.m., with the race starting at 10:30 a.m.

  5. Break In - last Sunday
Last Sunday afternoon/evening saw the apparent break-in of the JP program canteen. If anybody has any information on whom may have been around the club at this time please contact club manager Rich at 819-827-2122 or manager@gryc.ca. If you would like to remain anonymous please slide a note under the manager's door at the club.

  6. Volunteers
We still need a couple of volunteers for the next Club Night. A reminder to all members that it is your responsibility to record your volunteer contributions to the club in the Volunteer Log Book. The Volunteer Log Book is kept by the phone outside the office.

On Saturday, August 9 2008, the GRYC is planning a pot luck Chinese supper to celebrate the starting of the Olympics. We will be eating at 6:00 so please arrive in enough time to prepare your contribution. There is limited space for cooking in the kitchen, so if your contribution can't be prepared on the BBQ, prepare it at home and transport it wrapped in a thick towel to keep it warm. Feel free to dress in some sort of Chinese outfit. Remember, it is pot luck, so if you don't bring any food, don't expect to eat!!!! The club will supply rice so please don't bring that. 5. 5. Morrissett Cup, Sunday August 10, 10:30 a.m.
Single-handedly race in boats built for 2. Boats built for two are single-handedly raced for the Morrisett Cup. Any Dinghy with two sails can be entered (420, Albacore, Y-Flyer, etc). A real test of sailing skills and quick wits.

  6. GRYC Invitational Regatta ~ a storming success.
"A calm before the storm" would accurately describe the beginning of last week's annual GRYC Invitational Regatta. After some delay awaiting arrival of wind, racing eventually commenced mid Saturday morning. However, the only thing moving fast was the river's current.

Things started to change, but not immediately for the better. Under the watchful eye of John Pomeroy in the Crash Boat and Barb Martin's, Officer of The Day, the decision to get the dinghy racers off the water before the thunder and lighting storm struck was very well timed. The cabin boats were not so lucky. While the dinghy sailors were enjoying a wonderful healthy lunch in the clubhouse the cabin boat sailors had to endure the storm as they rushed to cross the finish line.

While waiting out the storm many of the junior sailors played a boisterous game of "prom date" while others swapped sailing stories. Fleet Captain Geoff Erskine commanded racers back on the water for a 2:15 p.m. start. Sailing conditions were now fantastic, the high winds carried right through to the end of racing at noon hour on Sunday.

Organizers were most pleased to have a great turnout of GRYC members, strong representation from BYC and the coach of the Quebec sailing team in attendance. A total of 41 boats were present, a recent record.

Congratulations to Sam Fuller (BYC) winning the Laser class, Dan & Cal Gray (GRYC) who very narrowly beat out Warren and Sam Place (GRYC) both in Albacore's to win the Handicap class, Garrett Brooman (BYC) winning the Junior Laser class, Kim Preston-Thomas (BYC) winning the Laser Radial class, and finally, Neil Rask along with his crew of John Russell and Michael O'Neill winning Cabin Boat class with the GRYC Sandpiper.

A heartfelt thank you to the many volunteers, you made this a very successful event. The volunteers worked harmoniously simply making things happen just as planned. It was also wonderful having so much youth involvement, both as sailors and volunteers. Thanks to all. - Dan Gray & Geoff Erskine, Fleet Captains

Regatta results will be posted as soon as they are ready in the next couple of days. Pictures of the Regatta will be posted in the GRYC photo archive as soon as they are ready. Anyone with pictures of the regatta that they would like to share, please drop them off with Manager Rich at the Club or contact GRYC Communications.

  7. Ladies' Night on the deck!!
Ladies' Night last Thursday was unexpectedly glorious. Sunny, warm, fabulous swimming, spectacular food, good conversation and grand company. I will try to organize another one before the end of August. Hope to see lots of members and friends out to that one. - Catherine

  8. Volunteers Needed
The GRYC Duty Officer has been a huge success. All participants have really enjoyed wearing the Captain's hat for this volunteer position. Many members are learning, for the first time, how to properly lock-up & close the island facilities for the evening. The task takes only about 30 minutes, especially if you stop to chat to folks still on the island! We still have a few evenings in need of a duty officer including weekends in August and the weeks of August 18-22, August 30-Sept 1, Sept 6/7. Contact the Club Manager at manager@gryc.ca or leave a message on the club phone line 819 827-2122.

We need more volunteers for this weekend's sailing activities and the next couple of weeks. For Race Officials, please contact Pat Curry at ryeo@travel-net.com or call 819 827-2953 and for Crash Boats please contact Todd Evans 819 827-5404 or todd@chelseafinancial.ca.

We also need two volunteers for the August 20 Club Night and a volunteer to organize the year end banquet on October 4. The organizer would earn 3 volunteer credits. For more information, contact Casey at rearcommodore@gryc.ca.

To see volunteer positions still needed, follow the Volunteering links on the GRYC web site home page.

  9. Rolex, the Spirit of Yachting
Here is something the sailors at the Yacht Club may be interested in, on the TV, BBC World, channel 510 on expressview each Sunday at 06:30 ( there may be other times as well) there is a lovely programme. It is called "Rolex, the Spirit of Yachting" it is about sailing races etc. from all over the world. To-day was a race in the Mediterranean. Next week the programme focuses on Newport R.I. - Cheers ... Allan

  10. Calling all Golfers
Al Richens is proud to announce this year's Chateau Lafayette Open at the Larrimac Golf Club in Chelsea, Friday August 15th 2008. This is a nine hole "best-ball" fun game and everyone is invited. The teams will be made up upon arrival and the first tee off is at 9:00am. Coffee and muffins can be purchased in the club house.

Following the golf all are invited to meet in the club house for a beverage and a sandwich during which time the various historical, architectural and cultural aspects of the "Laf" will be discussed. Those not familiar with this fine old Ottawa establishment are encouraged to drop in and sample it's unique ambiance on the Byward Market and acquaint or reacquaint themselves with it while ordering and enjoying a "quart" of their favourite brand.

This event brings together two very interesting long lasting establishments. The Chateau Lafayette on the Byward Market is the oldest establishment of it's kind in operation.

The Larrimac Golf Club is the club that has operated the longest in it's current location in the our region. Interested golfers are asked to let Al know that you will attend. - Jos Woods

This year, the Bronze Sailors participated in the Sunday races as part of their program. The overall winner of the Summer Series is Geoff Erskine & Jamie Erskine with Dan Gray placing second and Bruce Lorimer third. Of the Juniors, Paul Place, Tyler Gray and Saian Cantin placed first, second and third.

Our 420 teams were Samuel Landry and Antoine Maisonneuve-Boivin, and Claire Landry and Emilie Macfie (sailing Spray and Spindrift, bought with a legacy from club founder Pat Evans). All enjoyed the strong winds of Lake of Two Mountains, and they did very well in competition with sailors from clubs ranging from Memphramagog to London. Results will be posted at http://www.hudsonyachtclub.com/hyc/fruitbowl/en/index.html

Many thanks to coach Kate Bobyn, and to chaperones and drivers Nancy Landry, Beth Macfie, Patrick Boivin and especially Paul Fydenchuk who made several trips to transport the boats.

  6. Pink Sail Success
As always, a fabulous day... Sailors sailed, paddlers paddled and rowers rowed! A flotilla of boats (1 Albacore, 1 laser, 1 cabin sail boat, 1 canoe, 2 kayaks, 1 rowboat and 1 crash boat) and 16 pink ladies made their way up river to the designated landing. We sailed, we dined, we raised a toast (to just about everything), we swam and we chatted the afternoon away. Steady wind home was the final touch to an excellent day. Special thanks to Marylies Woods for organizing our destination spot (Shirley Brown's river front lawn), and to Gonnie DeWitte and Margo Griimes for volunteering to organize next years' pink sail! See y'all next year! - Patti - See pictures posted with this week's Newsletter on the GRYC web site provided by Patti Goodman.

  7. Regatta Volunteers Wanted
The GRYC Invitational Regatta, to be held the weekend of August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, is the Club's biggest and most important sailing event of the year. Please note that we are particularly lacking in volunteers for this event. If you have any time available for this weekend please contact the club manager Rich Childs by email at manager@gryc.ca or call the Club at 819 827-2122. There is also a sign-up sheet on the Island bulletin board where you can sign-up for a number of regatta volunteer positions. Volunteers are needed for crash boat (3), registration desk (Fri & Sat - 2 each day), boat towing (Fri & Sat - 2), breakfast servers (Sat & Sun - 2), lunch servers (Sat & Sun - 4), dinner BBQ (Sat - 2) and dinner servers/cleanup (Sat - 7). Please help make this event a success.

Also for the Regatta, two Assistant Race Results Officers are wanted for August 2-3. Duties will include data entry, coordination with the Race Committee, and assisting Neil with other Race Results requirements. Data Entry Officer must have experience with MS Excel. Liason Officer (running results to and from lighthouse) is ideally suited for a GRYC youth member. Please send a note to results@gryc.ca by Friday, July 25.

  8. Carry on/Carry off
Please remember to bring bags/containers to carry your garbage off the island. We have been noticing an increase in the amount of garbage left on the island in club garbage bins. Please note that garbage pick-up in Chelsea only occurs every second week so garbage can sit up to two weeks before collection.

  9. Club boat sign-out
Please remember to sign out all club boats before use. This is critical to keep track of any issues/problems with the club boats and employ repairs in a timely fashion. Remember these boats undergo a lot of wear and tear as they are used by both club members and children in our Sailing Youth program.

  10. GRYC at Fruit Bowl
Please wish our Bronze sailors good luck in the upcoming Fruit Bowl regatta to be held July 24-27 in Hudson Quebec. We will be sending a contingent of five Bronze sailors of whom will be participating in their first ever race outside of the GRYC.

  6. GRYC Regatta, August 2 and 3
Steeped in tradition and history, the annual GRYC Invitational Regatta will take place the weekend of August 2 and 3. And this year there will be a Big Boat Class at the GRYC Invitational Regatta (as long as there are sufficient entries). Mark your calendars and plan to participate. This is always a special event, due in great part to the volunteers. And there are lots of fun tasks for volunteers. Members can assist with the registration desk, road closure, and boat taxi, which will be happening the evening of Friday, August 1 and on Saturday morning. Servers are also needed for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A Regatta volunteer's sign-up sheet has been posted on the bulletin board at the club so, please sign-up. You can also do so by contacting the Club Manager by email at manager@gryc.ca or phone the Club at 819 827-2122.

  7. Junior Program Spaces
There are still a few places available in Session 4. Anyone interested in sending a child for just 1 week or two to increase their sailing skills or achieve a Sailing Level is welcome. Also during this time, adults could come in mornings or afternoons for lessons ($15/half day). Please contact the Youth Program Registrar at youthregistrar@gryc.ca for more information.

  8. Guest Policy
The following policy, along with the no smoking policy noted in last week's Newsletter, have been updated and/or revised by the Board of Directors at the last meeting. They will be posted in the Blue Book on the web site.

An adult member is allowed to host up to ten people at one time. Members are responsible for their guests. Among other things, this means that members must be on the Islands with their guests at all times. A family membership is considered one membership unit. Two adults within a family membership may not invite 20 guests at one time.

In a Family membership adults are allowed to host guests. However, children within a family membership, who are 18 years and older will be recognized as young adults and may host up to two guests. Alternatively, and in accordance with GRYC by-laws, a child within a family membership, at 18 years of age, can choose to take out an adult membership and as such, have full adult guest privileges. Children within a family membership and under the age of 18 may not personally host guests. For children to have non-member friends at the club, the friends must be guests of an adult, and as such the adult must be on the island.

More than ten guests at a time is considered to be a private party, for which members must make special arrangements with the Rear Commodore and pay the appropriate fee. Private parties are generally not permitted between June 1 and Labour Day. Particular or unusual circumstances should be referred to the Rear Commodore for resolution.

  9. Membership Lists
Copies of the 2008 Membership List will be available to pick up from the Manager at the Club starting at tonight's Club Night. Please note that we would like to limit one copy of the Membership List per family.

Calling all GRYC members of the female persuasion. Have a night out on the GRYC deck with friends and fellow members. Thursday evening July 24. Rain date Thursday July 31. A great follow up to the Pink Sail.

Arrive early - 5-ish - for a swim, then congregate on the deck for dinner. Bring something to BBQ, something to share (appetizer, salad, dessert - whatever your specialty) and your beverage of choice. Bring your own dishes etc. (or use the club's, but be prepared to wash up).

Feel free to invite a friend or two. If inviting non-members, please be sure to arrive with them or meet them at the gate so you can let them in. Look forward to seeing you. For further info contact Catherine (Katie) Morrison at cmorrison@morrassoc.cacmorrison@morrassoc.ca or call 819 827-4889.

  11. Chinese Supper, Saturday, August 9
Please bring your own dishes and serving bowls and utensils and bring them home dirty, This will make the cleanup easier.

Please remember your assigned rack location and park your boat in your assigned rack location. Check with the Club Manager if you want to move to a new spot so that our registration records can be updated. Don't just take one you like or one that appears free.

Please remember that your Club can not run without your participation. Add your name to the sign-up sheets on GRYC bulletin board or follow the links on the GRYC home page to see volunteer positions still available and to contact the volunteer coordinators.

  10. Reminders

    No Smoking
The GRYC Islands are a smoke-free zone. As required by Provincial law, www.msss.gouv.qc.ca/loi-tabac, the GRYC property and facilities are non-smoking. This includes the clubhouse, the island and the catwalk. This applies to guests as well, so please remind your guests of this and any other club policies. Thank you for not smoking.

    Carry-on, Carry-off
Please take all your own garbage and recycling home with you. This includes, but is not limited to: beverage bottles & cans, food scraps, food wrappers & bags, etc. There are plastic bags by the door in the kitchen if needed. We are limited by the same municipal pick-up as any other house in Chelsea, so we don't have the facilities for garbage & recycling from 200+ members. Thank you for your continued support in this endeavour.

    Dishes
You are welcome to use the club dishes, cutlery, and BBQ implements, however, please wash, dry, and put away anything that you use before you leave. If you see a dish or glass that needs washing while you are doing yours, feel free to wash it as well. Thank you for your help.

Four boats competed in last weeks "I AM Canadian" Big Boat Race. The results of the race have been posted on the web site.

  5. Facilities Request
From Giles: Several people have applied to do painting jobs so there needs to be a bit more coordination. I have therefore posted a 'painting job sheet' on a locker door in the club house near the men's washroom (the painting materials are on top of the lockers.)

This is really an exercise in self-organization - so please make sure you are clear on the sheet what job you have taken on. There should be plenty of opportunity to team up as well. For instance, if you are adopting a picnic table to paint make sure the tables are numbered first, so your art work won't be overpainted by a zealous brush later on. For questions re material etc. please contact me at facilities@gryc.ca. I am also receptive to any new initiatves which members might propose.

On a more general note, members please take the initiatives to adopt a facilities job. Don't leave your volunteer requirement until the end of the season! There are jobs needed to be done now involving some carpentry, some dock fixing, cable stringing, brush cutting, weed whacking and branch lopping: and again we welcome suggestions but all the better if backed by enthusiasm to undertake!

A big thank you to people who have contacted me alredy and have been working hard already - Jos Woods on the serving table; and Scott Gibson, Mike Lemay and recently Michel Roy on the kitchen deck/stairs.

  6. GRYC Invitational Regatta
This year's GRYC Invitational Regatta will be held on August 2 - 3, 2008. Classes will include Lasers, Albacores, and Handicap classes with Junior (16 & under) divisions. See Invitational Regatta on the GRYC web site for more information.

  7. GRYC Pictures
Calling on all photographers. If you have any pictures of Club events or are willing to take pictures of Club events, we would like to post these on the GRYC Photo Archive to make them available to all Members. Please contact GRYC Communications if you have any pictures or are willing to photograph events.

  4. Commodore's Sailpast
Sunday's unsettling weather was not enough to hold back many adventurous GRYC sailors, paddlers, even a rubber dinghy. The sky cleared, the sun shone and the sail past began with an orderly procession of saluting and sailing. The Commodore and her guards admirably defended their great looking raft, but were ultimately toppled in a subversive attack by the crew on the club's sandpiper. After, Members enjoyed fabulous local strawberries and whipped cream, while ceremoniously toasting, with champain, the commodore and the start of the 2008 sailing season. Thank you to all the event volunteers and participants for a job well done.

  5. Facilities Volunteers
From Giles: we could do with a brush cutter, preferably with their own whippersnipper to tidy up the car park, and also someone prepared to cut branches and saplings along Summerlea. I am also looking for exta hands to do some painting/watersealing around the club house, and work on the new deck stairs. Also, on the kitchen deck, a capenter type would be helpful to screw up the railings around the new kitchen deck this week. Anyone keen on pouring a bit 'o' concrete would be a big help. We also need someone to do some painting of lockers. Contact facilities@gryc.ca if interested. See also Job List for other tasks.

  6. Call for Volunteers
In addition to the request for volunteers for the facilities jobs above, volunteers are still needed for Duty Officers, Safety (crash) Boat Operators and Point Duty. Note that this is your Club and without your help, these events can not be staged for your enjoyment. Thank you to all who have already signed up. The Events list is nearly completed for the Club Nights. See the volunteering note on the GRYC home page for links to check positions still available.

  7. The Great Gatineau River Festival, September 27
Interested in paddling down the Gatineay River! The Great Gatineau River Festival on September 27 is a "decent on the Gatineau river in non-motorized boats" from Wakefield to the Marianne Philips Park in Cantley (near the Chelsea Dam). The festival is looking for volunteers. Please help spread the word. Also, mark your calendars now --- we would like to see many GRYC members consider participating in the river festival. See www.ladescente.ca for more information on the day's events and for registration information.

The GRYC is a stopping point for recreational paddlers needing a rest on their paddle from Wakefield to Cantley. We will need volunteers on the island that day. If you are interested in volunteering or plan to participate please contact the Club Manager at manager@gryc.ca. More information later.

GRYC Learn to Sail Clinics are free and open to all members. No experience necessary. Boat Basics covers basic terminology, knots, and learning to rig the club Squadrons and Lasers. The Learn to Sail program will take place on Saturday afternoons from June 21 to August 23. The program is open to all members, young and old, and at all levels of experience. The program will conclude with a Family Fun Regatta on August 18 where all the skills that members have acquired over the summer can be put to the test in a fun and friendly competition. This year, the Learn to Sail clinics will be given by Aneka Lizotte, a Junior Program staff member.

  2. Sailpast & Strawberry Social - Sunday, June 22, 1:00-5:00 pm
This Sunday is the annual Commodore's Sailpast. This event, full of pomp and ceremony, is shared throughout the sailing world paying tribute and respect to our commander and chiefs. At the GRYC we follow this tradition with flags and sails flying, then add our own special touch with an all-out battle of aquatic proportions. Vessels of all shapes and sizes are welcome and encouraged to participate and bowing out before the water flies, while undoubtedly will be scorned at the time, is perfectly acceptable. All this is followed by a feast of delicious strawberries and toasts to and from our Commodore.

1.00 pm. - Rig your boat (sail, canoe, kayak, wind surfer - all welcome); dress yourself and your boat with flags and such, and ready appropriate armament in time for the actual Sail Past. 1:30 pm - Skippers meeting. At least one representative from EACH BOAT MUST BE PRESENT to receive orders of the day.

2:00 p.m. - the Sail Past. Participate in any vessel including sailboats, canoes & kayaks, or enjoy the festivities from the relative safety of the island. The Commodore will be marooned on a raft somewhere off Lighthouse Point. Boats rally upriver at a designated mark, and then sail past in an orderly fashion, gravely saluting the commodore to show her honour. Then everyone circles around and lets the commodore (and apparently her guard) have it with whatever non-lethal water-based weapons that can be mustered.

4:00 p.m. Champagne and strawberries. Whether you manage to make it onto the river or not, come join fellow members to toast the opening of the 2006 sailing season on the Gatineau river.

Special note from our Commodore - Wanted: Body Guard(s). To help ward off and wage battle against the GRYC fleet. Interested parties to apply in writing to commodore@gryc.ca or call Patti at 819 827-1173.

  3. Ice Breaker
Over one hundred people showed up for the Ice Breaker BBQ where a number of new Members were introduced to the Club. Thanks to Rear Commodore Casey and volunteers for organizing this event with enough food for the rest of the season.

  4. Whiskey A-Go-Go Big Boat Race and Sail Jam '08 Results
Sailjam '08 was a great success despite the light and shifty winds. Nine boats, including 2 new Members sailed in four races. Congratulations go to Alex Felso for being consistently in the lead. Geoff Erskine noted that he saw general improvement all around (especially at the starts). See Race Results for complete results for both races.

Five boats competed in the start of the Whiskey A-Go-Go Big Boat Race although only three boats completed the race due to the light and shifty winds. Neil Rask placed first with a special note to Bernie Applebaum for completing the longest race of 3 hours and 25 minutes.

  5. GRYC Hours of Operation
The club is now open daily until Labour Day. The Club is open by the staff (camp staff and/or club manager) in the morning and closed up by the Duty Officer.

Island Hours - With the exception of special club events, the Island and Club facilities are considered closed after 10 PM. The neighbors have been advised to contact the MRC Police if there is any late night noise or suspicious activity on the island. Those found on the island after 10:00 p.m. may be subject to trespassing charges.

  6. Volunteers Needed
Many volunteer sign-up opportunities remain unfilled. To sign up, please contact the coordinator for the volunteer tasks or consult the volunteer lists on the GRYC bulletin board. These lists, which will be updated weekly, have now been added to the GRYC web site. Consult these lists to see the volunteer positions that are still available. Lists have been posted for Duty Officers, Club Events, Safety (crash) Boat Operators and Facilities Jobs. Links to these lists are on the GRYC home page.

  7. Boats & Lockers Registration
A reminder that any unclaimed lockers will have their locks cut and will be reassigned and unclaimed boats will be assimilated into the club fleet. If you are unsure of the status of your locker or boat, contact the Manager.

Lockers: If you paid for a locker but a "?" appeared on your membership renewal form, you have not registered your locker. If a number appeared, then your locker has been accounted for and will be left untouched.

Boats: If you were issued a sticker last or this season (white sticker with GRYC insignia and number - no year) then your boat(s) has/have been entered into the database. The information for your boat(s) including location and sticker number should have appeared on your membership renewal form.

Members who have requested new boat and canoe mooring or rack storage and lockers as well as Members who have indicated change of location should contact the Manager. Please do not take action without the approval of the Manager in order that the boat and locker registration can be kept up-to-date. All boats, canoes, etc. including new boats must must have a valid GRYC sticker.

Contact the Manager (see end of email for contact info) if you have any questions about the boat and/or locker registry or to confirm your information if you are unsure.

  8. Boat Ramp
The Boat Ramp gate is now locked for the season. Notify the Manager to open the boat ramp gate to launch your boat. Please note that this boat ramp should only be used by Club Members to launch their sail boats.

The cast-off event for the GRYC social season is the Ice Breaker Barbecue on Saturday, rain or shine. The Ice Breaker welcomes those new sailors to the GRYC and also brings together returning club members for an evening of fun, food and frivolity. Dinner will be served promptly at 6:00 PM. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Please try to bring exact change. This is a BYOB event. However, the drink machine will be stocked with beer and soft drinks so remember to bring loonies and toonies. Members are encouraged to bring their own plates, glasses and cutlery. However, paper plates and plastic cutlery will be available.

  2. Father's Day "Whiskey A-Go-Go" & Sail Jam '08, Sunday June 15, 10:30 AM
This upcoming Sunday will be an active day on the water at the GRYC, a great opportunity for both sailors and spectators. The action begins at 10:30 AM with skippers meeting for both races at around 10:00 AM. The "Big Boats" have their first event of the season, the Father's Day "Whisky A-Go-Go" Big Boat Race, and the dingy sailors will be having fun with Sail Jam '08. Sail Jam is a series of multiple, very short, one-lap races for lasers and other dinghies. A great chance for the dinghy sailors to practice their starting line technique and learn more at this informal event. The number of races will be determined by the time it takes for the Big Boats to sail around Banana Island and back. Hope to see you on Sunday.

  3. Spring Series Wrap-up
The Spring Series concluded on the weekend with 10 boats participating, including a great contigent of lady & junior racers! Geoff Erskine again took the lead for the day. Strong and/or gusty winds and a great turnout of veteran and rookie sailors, and those inbetween, at all three race days made for a very exciting and successful Spring Series with 15 crews participating. Congratulations to Geoff Erskine for placing first with Warren & Sam Place in second and Neil Rask in third. Congratulations also to Paul Place for not only taking the lead in the Junior fleet but for coming out for every race day! See 2008 Race Results for complete listing of the individual and complete series race results. Thanks also to all the point duty crews (Race Officials) coordinated by Pat Curry, the crash boat crews coordinated by Todd Evans, and to Neil Rask for calculating the results. We look forward to seeing more sailors out for the Summer Series starting July 6!

  4. Junior Program Limited Spaces
Better hurry if you intend to sign your kids up for this summer's Junior Program. The White Sail Programs for Sessions 1, 2 and 3 are full. There is still a few spaces available for White Sail Campers in Session 4 (August 5 - 15). Note that Session 4 usually has the best wind! The first session of the Bronze level is currently full (June 23 - July 18) but there are a couple of spaces left for the second session (July 21 - August 15). For more info, see the Junior Program info on the GRYC web site.

  5. New Gate Code Saturday
This time the gate code will definitely change. The new code will be handed out at the Ice Breaker BBQ. For those not attending (or forgetting), contact the Club by telephone 819 827-2122, email the Club Manager at manager@gryc.ca or contact GRYC Communications. And remember, please do NOT give the gate code to anyone but Club Members.

  6. Volunteers Needed
Volunteer lists for Duty Officers, Job List, Rescue boat and race officials and Club events are posted on the bulletin board. Thanks to all who signed up for volunteer positions to date. However volunteer positions are still required for a number of activities. One is for Duty Officer for the July weekends. All of June and July weekdays have already been filled. See Duty Officers on the GRYC web site for more information and contact the Manager at manager@gryc.ca to sign up. Another volunteer requirement is for rescue boat and race officials. Contact Todd Evans at todd@toddevans.com to sign up. The Facilities Job List still has lots of volunteer opportunities. Last, but not least, is the GRYC Events for which most of the volunteer positions have been already been filled for the season. Contact Casey at rearcommodore@gryc.ca to sign up.

  7. Club Summer Hours
Starting this weekend the Club will be open every day. The facilities will be open daily in the morning and closed in the evening by the Duty Officer. Please observe the rules of the Club. Note that children under 14 are not allowed on the Islands at any time without parental supervision. The Manager will be on duty but can not be there all the time. If you need to see the Manager contact him by telephone at 819 827-2122 or email to manager@gryc.ca. A list has been left by the Manager at the office door for you to note any problems, suggestions, missing supplies, etc. You will have the opportunity to meet our new Manager, Richard Childs, at the Ice Breaker BBQ this weekend.

  8. Island Tidiness
This spring has seen several instances of untidiness on the Islands such as tools and supplies left out, candy wrappers and other garbage left on the ground and dishes not washed and put away. To alleviate the congestion in the Tool Shed, all gardening tools have been moved to under the center bay of the Club House. Please keep our Islands clean and tidy. Also please respect the "Carry-on, Carry-off garbage" rule. Thank you for your continued cooperation.

GRYC News and Notices - May 28, 2008

In this issue:

  1. First Race Last Week
  2. Spring Series II
  3. New Member update
  4. Wall of Honour
  5. Volunteer Sign-up Sheets
  6. Volunteer Log
  1. First Race Last Week
The first race of the seaon started off with great winds. Eight boats participated in the first race of the three races in the Spring Series. The race results have been posted at the club and on the GRYC web site.

  2. Spring Series II - Sunday June 1 10:30am

  3. New Member update
The GRYC membership wait list (50 applications) has been reordered to reflect the 2007 AGM by-law change. Sponsors of the member applicants (the club has openings for 10 adult memberships this year) have been contacted and asked to verify their applicant does indeed either have a boat and/or a genuine interest in sailing. There are many keen local sailors on the wait list and it is important when sponsoring a potential new member that they are truly interested in being active sailing participants at the club. The new applicants being offered membership and their sponsors' are invited to attend a new member information night (May 29th) before making the final decision as to whether to become a GRYC member.

Active member participation and sailing are the two key features that make for a dynamic, vibrant club. As members it is important to remember that if you can not really participate at the club one summer, to consider moving to a retaining membership. Retaining members may re-activate their membership at any time, regardless of the current membership quota. However, when you move to retaining, you open a spot for a new active member. We look forward to welcoming the new members at the Ice-Breaker BBQ on June 14th. Mark your calendars!

  4. Wall of Honour
Come and see the Wall of Honour. For the past two years, David Newing and Joe Dion with the assistance of Neil Rask have put in a huge effort of compiling a list of all the trophy winners from the start of sailing at the GRYC in 1963, often from incomplete records. The Wall of Honour has been placed on the wall by the front door to the Club, beside the trophy case. You can also see the Wall of Honour on the GRYC Web site. Any errors or omissions can be noted on a sheet beside the Wall of Honour.

  5. Volunteer Sign-up Sheets
Sign-up sheets for volunteering have been posted on the GRYC bulletin board. Please take time to consult these lists and add your name. Without your help, the events will not happen. The following 3 lists have been posted on the bulletin board:
    - Duty Officer
    - Club Events
    - Job List

  6. Volunteer Log
Many thanks to all members who have helped out at the various events and projects that have occurred and/or are underway already this season. A reminder to all members to log all your volunteer contributions in the Volunteer Log Book located outside the Manager's Office in the clubhouse regardless whether your name appears on volunteer lists or sign-up sheets. The Volunteer Log Book is the only source of information reviewed by the Board.

GRYC Special Notice: Hands-On Crash Boat Clinic: Saturday, May 31 10:30am

Attention all members who would like to or may have an interest in volunteering as a Crash Boat Operator and/or Assistant this summer:

The Hands-On Crash Boat Clinic was postponed last weekend and will now take place this coming Saturday, May 31, from 10:30am to 12:00pm. Former Manager Neil Rask has agreed to run this clinic RAIN or SHINE. The clinic will be geared towards all crash boat operators and assistants whether you've had previous experience, are new to the role, or are thinking that this may be what you want to do this summer; no experience necessary . This is a great opportunity to learn or review the following topics:
- demonstration of each of the club motorboats and how to operate them.
- what to do when on crash boat operator/assistant duty
- setting a buoy (mark) and laying a course
- rescuing a sailor in distress and towing a boat.

If you intend to attend the clinic, please email Neil at neil.rask@gmail.com to give him a rough idea of numbers, however, if you're not sure what you're weekend has in store yet, feel free to simply drop by on Saturday, May 31 at 10:30am!

A sign-up sheet, courtesy of Todd Evans - Crash Boat Volunteer Coordinator, will also be on-hand for you to sign up for events throughout the summer, so have a look at the GRYC calendar ahead of time to think about what date(s) you might be available.

What better way to get your volunteer time in at the GRYC by floating around on the river watching races or special events take place from the best-possible vantage-point while catching some rays and taking in the spectacular Gatineau River scenery.

There are two positions available for each crash boat crew:

Crash Boat Operator
Must have a valid Pleasure Craft Operator's Card and be 18 or older. This person is responsible for: ensuring the required safety equipment (and race equipment if applicable) is on board; the crash boat has sufficient fuel for the duration of the event; safely operating the crash boat for the duration of the event; for setting a course on race days (often with the help of an experienced sailor); and coordinating aquatic rescues should the need arise.

Crash Boat Assistant
Provide assistance to the Crash Boat Operator in whatever aspects of the role required. If the assistant holds a valid Pleasure Craft Operator's Card, they may act as a secondary Crash Boat Operator. Other than that, responsibilities include going for a fun motor-boat ride on the Gatineau River.

  4. Club Event Volunteer Opportunities
    Note from the Casey:
The GRYC wouldn't be the same without the social life enjoyed during the numerous club activities throughout the season. The cast-off event is the Ice Breaker Barbecue on June 14. The Ice Breaker welcomes those new sailors to the GRYC and also brings together club members for an evening of fun, food and frivolity. Denise Workun will be the Captain for the Ice Breaker but she can't do it alone. She needs deckhands to barbecue, serve and clean-up. To volunteer for this event, please email Casey Cerson at rearcommodore@gryc.ca. Deckhands will earn 1 volunteer credit toward the annual commitment. What better way to do your duty will having fun at the same time!

Another great way to quickly earn credits toward your volunteer commitment is to be an Event Captain. An Event Captain is responsible for picking-up the food and beverage order for the occasion and supervising the deckhands. The Rear Commodore will order the provisions and conscript the deckhands. An Event Captain earns an additional 2 volunteer credits (for a total of 3) for a given event (eg. one Club Night). Check out the list of club social events on the website by clicking on Members and Event Jobs. If you like nothing better than to just show up, boss people around and take most of the credit (or in this case, volunteer credits) for a job well done, email Casey Cerson at rearcommodore@gryc.ca to be an Event Captain.

For a list of event volunteer opportunities, including Event Captains, see Volunteering for Club Events and for more info on volunteer credits, see Volunteering at the GRYC.

  6. Missing Annual Reports
For anyone interested in the background and history of the Gatineau River Yacht Club, the Annual Reports, presented at the Annual General Meetings, provide a great insight into the evolution of the Club. All the Annual Reports have been posted on the GRYC web site in PDF format from the founding of the Club in 1963 to last year with the exception of three reports for 1999, 2001 and 2002. Doug Clancy and Geoff Erskine are looking for used lasers for their own use. Anyone wishing to sell a laser, please contact Geoff at joerskine@sympatico.ca.

And finally, here is the ant eradication recipe from Jos Woods to combat the ant problem at the Club as well as your home. This is weaker than the commercial preparations. Those tend to kill off the workers and the not the queen.
Here is the one that works:

    1 qt. water - (1.1litre)
    1 cup sugar - (250 ml.)
1 tblspn Boric Acid - (5 ml.) - Boric Acid is available at drug stores and can also be use for first-aid.

Use this liquid to soak a cotton-ball placed in a small (yogurt) container with holes to allow the ants in.
Check daily to make sure it is wet enough and doesn't dry out.
The ants will take a week or so to disappear.
If the do re-appear, some eggs could have hatched and simply repeat a second time.

    Happy (ant) hunting!

Thank you to all who participated on Saturday. So many hands make such light work. A special thank you to Board members who coordinated their areas and made for an efficient, fun, social Bridge Down.

And from Rich - our Club/Program Manager: "I would like to say that I had a great time on Saturday. It was a wonderful experience and great fun to meet all of you and the members of the club. I was extremely impressed with the teamwork/camaraderie displayed and all the hard work performed by all. I am thrilled to be part of such a great club with all its splendid history."

  3. PCOC Certification, Saturday, May 17
A Boat Operator's Certification course has been planned for Saturday, May 17, 2 - 5 pm at the GRYC, pending sufficient number signing up for the course. The cost of the course is $60 per person. This course will certify you with the Pleasure Craft Operator's Card - the federal requirement for any person operating a powered recreational watercraft. If you're interested, please email Fleet Captain Geoff Erskin at starboard@gryc.ca by Friday May 9.

  4. "La Débàcle" River Cruise, Sunday, May 18, 1pm - 4pm
The first sailing event of 2008. Big Boats, dinghies, canoes & kayaks... Hop on anything that floats and join the fleet of ready-sailors in a leisurely Spring cruise upriver. At a communally decided spot, all boats will moor together in a flotilla to share in the joy of being on the water again. Bring some snacks to share. Boats will depart at 1:00 pm. If you're still deciding when to launch your boat, this would be a great weekend to do so, and chances are that others will be around to give you a hand.

  5. Boat Repair Clinic, Saturday June 7th, 10 to 3pm, at GRYC
Learn how to repair holes in fiberglass and cracks/chips in gel coat during this clinic. We will provide the repair materials, coffee, juice and muffins. Cost to be confirmed, as cost of repair materials is shared amongst boat owners. We're estimating no more than $60.00 per boat. To participate, sign up and bring your boat. Maximum 6 boats. 6. Looking to volunteer? Take a turn at being the Duty Officer
The Duty Officer is a new role for members this summer. The role of the Duty Officer is to do an evening island check, basic clean up where necessary, chat to other members, lock up or verify with members eating on the deck that they will lock up and leave any notes or comments for the club manager.

We are looking for weekly (Monday - Friday) and weekend (Saturday/Sunday) Duty Officers starting the weekend of June 14th. For more information see Job List on the GRYC Web site. To sign up, contact the Club Manager by email to manager@gryc.ca or leave a message on the club phone line. 819-827-2122.

  7. Parking on Summerlea
The only parking allowed on the riverside of Summerlea is two spaces at the very end of the road, and the first space is reserved for the Club Manager. There is no longer parking available on that side of the road other than those two spots. This allows more space for cars dropping off and trying to turn around. Parking on the non-river side is clearly marked, and the no parking sections are areas where the road is too narrow to allow for cars to park and still have proper emergency vehicle access. Please respect parking signs.

  8. Carry-on, Carry-off
Again this year, we want to rmind everyone to please take all your own garbage and recycling home with you.

  9. Revised Web Site
The GRYC Web site has been reorganized. The main changes are the addition of a "Members" and "Sailing" sections which incorporates the previous "Activities", "Volunteering" and "Blue Book" sections. The "History" section has been greatly expanded and look also at the "Island Plants" in the "About GRYC" section.

  10. Miscellaneous
Please note that the gate code was not changed last Saturday. Stay tuned for the change.
Summer is really here (or is it spring) as Anne Burbidge started her swimming laps around the Island on Monday! "Actually, it was cold but not unbearable".

  11. Mother's Day Brunch
    Note from Catherine Morrison:
Mother's Day Brunch with the Katie Diamond Band (long-time GRYC members - Catherine Morrison, Richard Garlick)

  1. Bridge Down - Saturday May 3, 9:30 am
The snow is gone, the river is open and the weather forecast for Saturday sounds great. It's time for the annual GRYC Bridge Down. This is an all-hands-on-deck event, rain or shine, where members help bring the island out of its long winter's nap and get things ready for the quickly approaching summer. A lot of work has to be completed and, especially in the case of hauling boats, many hands make light work! After a morning of hard work, all participants are rewarded to a hearty lunch, prepared by our new Rear Commodore Casey, and an opportunity to shoot the breeze, and not to mention starting on your volunteer credits for the season!

  2. New Program/Club Manager
Please join the Board in welcoming Richard Childs as this seasons' new club manager. Many of you know Richard as he is owner and operator of "A Step Up" - the Chelsea gym and studio located in the CLSC building on the 105. Richard also works as an educator at Chelsea Elementary where he provides sports instruction for Chelsea students. He has lived in Chelsea for 4.5 years with his wife Sandra and three children (Aidan, Caleb, and Isla). Richard is looking forward to his season with the club - getting to know members, working with the youth program and sailing committee and undertaking general maintenance around the island. His first day is bridge down -so please come out and introduce yourselves and help him get acquainted.

  6. Volunteer Log Book
The GRYC Volunteer Log Book will again be available outside the office this year. As a Member, it is your responsibility to report you volunteer contributions to the club. Please fill out the relevant information every time you volunteer for an event. The Board is grateful to all who logged their volunteer efforts last year. See Volunteering at the GRYC for more details.

  7. New Tillers
The GRYC extends a big thanks to Blair Erskine for the donation of two Albacore tillers to the Club. The tillers will be a welcome replacement to the existing hockey stick handles.

  8. Katie Yeo
The following is a note from Richard Yeo (former Commodore):

During the week of March 24-29, Katie Yeo represented Canada and the GRYC at the Youth Laser Radial World Championships held at Takapuna Beach, Auckland, New Zealand on the Hauraki Gulf (www.takapunaworlds.com). Katie was the only Canadian among the 38 female and 85 males youths participating. The six day regatta was held under ideal and at times very exciting sailing conditions, allowing two scheduled races to be completed each day for a total of twelve races. Winds were consistently 15 knots and above.

Katie tied for 32nd place on points, two points behind a New Zealand sailor who passed her on the last race. Katie's best results were on day 2 and day 5 in 20 knot winds and 1.5 metre seas, when she placed 21st and 25th, and 22nd and 23rd respectively. Katie was fortunate to be able to participate in the Worlds, since she is living two hours south of Auckland on a year long stay abroad in New Zealand. Katie is completing the equivalent of her first year of CEGEP there and will be done in December.

During the same week, the Men's Laser Radial Worlds were also being held at Takapuna. Canadian Mike Leigh, Canada's top Laser Full Rig sailor, who is vying for the Olympic Laser berth, participated following the Laser Worlds in Australia in February. Mike won the competition, coming first out of 71 participants. Mike dominated the competition as illustrated by his two allowed dropped races for 12 race series being a 10th and a 2nd.

Many very exciting Laser sailing photographs from the Youth and Men's Worlds can be found at www.takapunaworlds.org/index.cfm?eid=1042 and at www.oceanphotography.co.nz . From the Ocean Photography site, photographs from Day 5 (Day 5 LR M & Y) and Day 2 (Day 2 LR M & Y) from the left selection bar provide the most exciting snapshots of the high wind sailing in big waves. Katie's sail number is Can 170762 and Mike Leigh's is Can 175948.

  1. Membership Renewal
Think summer, think sailing, think BBQ's on the deck overlooking the Gatineau River! This may be wishful thinking looking out the window today but summer is really just around the corner. Various Members of the Board and volunteers have been busy getting ready for the 2008 season. Membership renewals should start appearing early next week to be returned by May 2. Please check the application form carefully to make sure all of the your information is correct on your pre-printed form and return corrections with the form.

  2. Bridge Down
The Membership renewal package will include the 2008 GRYC calendar. The first event this year is Bridge Down set for May 3. However, if shovels are required on that day to clear the snow from the paths to the Club House or to move the sail boats, a snow date will be set for May 10. Stay tuned.

  3. Youth Registration
The Youth Program is taking registrations for their summer sailing program. There are still a number of spaces available in some levels. See the Youth Program information on the GRYC web site for more information. See also the beautiful Summer Sailing Camp information sheet created by Youth Committee Member, Tracy Carefoot. The Youth Program is looking for additional volunteers to help with the Program. Contact Youth Program Chair Hamish McIntosh at youthprogram@gryc.ca if you are interested in helping.

  4. Crash Boat Volunteers
We are again looking for volunteers to coordinate the maintenance of the GRYC motor or crash boats. The main duty is to be the point of contact for GRYC staff to have the boats repaired during the season, should this be necessary, and to help prep them for the start of the season. You do not have to be mechanically inclined. Contact Fleet Captain Dan Gray at port@gryc.ca if you are interested.

  5. Wall of Honour
The Wall of Honour is complete list of all GRYC races and winners from the inauguration of the Club put together by the Wall of Honour committee that will be mounted at the Club when ready. The Wall of Honour has been posted on the web site along with the list and information on the GRYC trophies. If you have additional information or updates for this, please send it to GRYC Communications at communications@gryc.ca.

  6. René Gachnang
It is with deep regret to inform you that René Gachnang passed away on March 16. René Gachnang was one of the early members of the of the GRYC and along with his wife Ester and children were very helpful with renovations and plumbing problems. René installed the plumbing and septic system when the new clubhouse was built. René also donated a sailboat to the Club.
