Connla was responsible for promoting the albacore class as a good family boat and also for promoting the racing program and the CYA training program for young people. He served as Vice-President of the Canadian Yachting Association in the 1970s during which time the cruising guidelines were initiated.

- Le Gel
The final event of the 2007 before close-up is this weekend. Join other big boats, dinghies, canoes and kayaks as we sail/paddle up the river enjoying the amazing weather and soaking in the stunning views the Gatineau River has to offer. Boats will then raft-up (form a flotilla) and share in some late-season festivities. Departure time has been changed to 12:00 noon to accommodate families and their turkey exploits if needed. This event is a perfect time to spend with family and friends on a Thanksgiving weekend. Hope to see you there!
- GRYC Annual Awards Banquet
The Annual End-of-Season Awards Banquet took place at the club last weekend. The weather was beautiful, the food was delicious, and the 80s cover band rocked the house! Congratulations to all the award recipients! See 2007 GRYC Trophies for the complete list of awards presented. A special thanks to Lise Marshall for organizing this event and to Marc Levac and the other volunteers for transforming the clubhouse into a magical, 5-star dining lounge and dance hall and making this such a great event.
At the event, our Club Manager, Neil Rask, announced that this is his final season in this role at the GRYC and thanked the membership for all the support and many happy memories over the many years at the club; a special tribute was presented to him from the Board and Sailing Committee.
- Volunteer Log
A reminder to all members that it is your responsibility to record your volunteer contributions to the club in the Volunteer Log Book. The Volunteer Log Book is kept by the public phone outside the office and will remain there until the day after Bridge-Up (see below). The Volunteer Log Book is the only source of information consulted by the Board when assessing volunteer contributions and assigning fines for the 2008 fees. If you cannot make it to the club over the next three weekends to fill in your page or if you have extenuating circumstances in which you were unable to fulfill your requirements of membership, please email manager@gryc.ca and your comments will be submitted in the Log Book and/or forwarded to the Board.
- Bridge Up
The final close-up of the club will be taking place RAIN OR SHINE on Saturday, October 20. Bridge-Up is and annual event to tidy things up and put things away on the island to prepare for the GRYC hibernation. While Bridge-Up is no longer a requirement for members to attend, all members are strongly encouraged to participate. The proverb "many hands make light work" definitely applies for this day. There is a lot of work to be done that day and it may be a final chance to see some fellow members before next Spring, not to mention a great opportunity to get in a bit of volunteer time.
Bridge-Up starts at 9:30 am and goes until the work is done with lunch provided for all participants.

- Frostbite Series & Dinghy Finale
The 2007 Dinghy races and the Frostbite Series concluded last week with another good turnout (see results. Eight boats battled in fierce competition with a nail-biting race to the finish on the last race which resulted in our own Club Manager Neil receiving his first 1st of the season! Congratulations and thanks to all the participants throughout the Summer for making this a great sailing season, and a special thanks to all the volunteers as Race Committee at the point and those on Crash Boat duty who made the racing possible.
- Notes from Facilities...
Thanks to Lieserl Woods and friend Nick for spending their Sunday re-decking one of the squadron docks. Scott Gibson kindly brought and operated his chop saw to cut the planks to the right length. Ecologists will be relieved to know that a family of dock spiders was re-housed during this operation and that a flourishing ecosystem was preserved on one of the older foam floats - an object best described as 'manky'. There remains enough cedar planking to re-deck the 420 dock this fall: if there are volunteers please contact facilities. The locker shed could also do with a painter - both outside and in. - Giles

- Water Testing Results for August 27, 2007
Friends of the Gatineau river (FOG) conducted the third Gatineau River water testing for the 2007 summer season on Monday, August 27. In Chelsea, the water quality at the Farm Point Community public dock showed a "B", or 'good' rating as did the Cascades Club water front, and the Burnet Rd. access point. Tests at the Gatineau River Yacht Club indicated a 'good' or "B" rating, a slight deterioration from the previous month. Water at the Tenaga Property Owners' Association Beach indicated an "A", 'excellent' rating.

The Last of the dinghy series continues this weekend with the 4th, 5th, and 6th of 9 races of the series. It's not too late to join in and if you're still waiting to take your first crack at racing, come on down. We look forward to as many sailors as we can get.
LAST WEEK
- "Irish Whiskey" Big Boat Race & Frostbite Series I
The Fall Sailing Season began on the weekend with Frostbite Series I dinghy race and "Irish Whiskey" Big Boat Race. Winds from the South determined that the start was downriver. The big boats continued downriver and around Turtle Island while the dinghies stayed on the GRYC stretch of river. However, the winds did not stay consistent and when all was said and done, a disproportionate number of upwind legs were sailed, despite heading up and down river. Results from the two races will be posted soon.
- Sail-O-Rama
A beautiful day, great wind and enthusiastic participants best describes this year's Sail-O-Rama. 8 teams sailed the high seas looking for clues, solving riddles and creating original GRYC limericks. For those that missed out - can you make six four letter words with the letters P, S, O, T ? And if you know your nautical flags, you would have figured out that the secret word was SPOT. Many thanks to Patti Goodman, Muriel Howe, Janey Crook and Marylies Woods for organizing the scavenger hunt and thanks to the many that 'pitched-in' and generally helped out with running the event on Monday afternoon.
- Happy 45th Birthday GRYC!
The GRYC celebrated its 45th Birthday with a fantastic cake made by our own Club Manager and champagne. A toast to Allan Richens and his fellow founding friends for their inspiration and foresight! Pictures from this event will be posted on the photo page soon.
Sailors were not the only ones out on Sunday to wish Neil a Happy Birthday. Our resident chippy, who you either love or hate, demonstrated his table etiquette by using a fork to have a wee taste of the sweet treat. (see picture). The impromptu surprise birthday gathering was such a well kept secret, that the guest of honor missed the event! Best wishes & Happy Birthday Neil! - Patti Goodman

The Frostbite Series will be taking place the next three consecutive Sundays: September 2, 9, and 16, each with a potential 3 races each day. The final results will be based on the best 5 of 9 races for each participant. We're looking to see new/old faces join our active sailors on the race course. If you haven't raced before or for a while, come and join in the fun. There is no better venue to try out your racing beginnings or to make your sailing come-back. Friendly competition and good advice can be found in abundance. We look forward to seeing you on the water!
Races start at 10:30 am sharp, so allow enough time for rigging & preparations. Club boats are first-come, first-served, so arrive early if you're choosy.

- Happy 45th Birthday GRYC & Sail-O-Rama
Labour Day also marks the GRYCs annual Birthday Party. The club was founded on September 2, 1962, which makes this year 45 years! The day's events will be as follows:
12:00 noon - Sail-O-Rama - this family-oriented event will consist of an on-water scavenger hunt from the island to various points around the river. Sailboats, canoes, kayaks, and even paddle-boards for the adventurous are invited to participate in a fun event with fun prizes. Instructions and rigging will begin at 12:00 noon and Boats will head out at approximately 1:00 pm.
4:00 pm - Birthday Celebration - boaters will have returned to the island and wrapped up their festivities. All members are welcome to join in to celebrate the club's 45th Birthday with Cake & Champagne! We look forward to seeing you all there!
- Moonlight Madness
Despite the lack of a moon, the revival of this historical GRYC event was a very special evening, surely to continue next year. In all, ten big and small boats participated. The sail boats, safety boats and the markers were all outfitted with multicoloured flashing "neon" sticks and sailors wore coloured light rings, all of which made for a special time on the water with lots of directional instructions heard from the boats all across the water. The race results will be posted shortly. Thanks to Fleet Captains Geoff and Dan for organizing this event as well as Commodore Patti for the delicious corn roast following the race. As a special note, the moon finally appeared at midnight, celebrated with margaritas on the back deck - see picture contributed by Marian Kupczynski.
- End of Club Nights
The GRYC Wednesday Club Nights this year have come and gone. An even greater number of Members enjoyed these events this year and were treated to the wonderful dinners and special summer evenings. Thanks again to Mary and Paul Johansen for organizing these as well as Rear Commodore Brigitte Lemay and the many volunteers.
- GRYC Fall Clubhouse Hours
After Labour Day, the club goes into the post-summer shoulder-season. This means that officially the clubhouse & facilities will only be open and the Manager on-duty on weekends. If you've been swimming at the club recently, you'll know that the water is still lovely and the evenings are beautiful for dinner at the club. In recent years we have given the opportunity to have the clubhouse open throughout the week until the beginning of October, but we need your help.
If you would like to keep the clubhouse open or if you have a need to fulfill volunteer hours, we need members to open and close the clubhouse from Monday to Friday. Opening can take place early to mid-morning and closing can take place mid to late evening, whatever fits your schedule. If you are interested and available for this task, please email Manager Neil at manager@gryc.ca ASAP with availability so an opening/lock-up schedule can be compiled. The schedule and available slots are posted on the GRYC calendar at www.gryc.ca. You can do a single day, a certain day each week, or a series of days and it can be morning and evening or just morning or evening, whatever works for you. On volunteering, you will receive instructions and access to a front door key.
Please note that the clubhouse will only be open on weekdays where both morning opening and evening lock-up have been covered. The Pram and Tool Sheds will be open on weekends only. For more information, contact Manager Neil.
- General Meeting September 9, 2007
Urgent structural repairs to the supports for the corner post and wall by the kitchen of the Club House have been identified by an engineering consultant. The Board is seeking approval for an additional expenditure of up to $15,000 to proceed with these repairs. According to the GRYC By-Laws Article 6, item 6 "An unforseen commitment exceeding $3,500, not included in the budget requires General Meeting approval prior to expenditure." Therefore, a General Meeting will be held on September 9, 2007 following the Frostbite Series race, approx. 1:00pm for this approval. Note that this expenditure is in addition to the repairs to the windows and the side deck, approved at the last AGM, which are proceeding this year.
- Learn about Board Positions
Somebody has got to do it. It may as well be you! I know many of you have a secret wish to participate on the GRYC board if only you knew what was involved. Now is your chance to find out. As Past Commodore, I will be hosting a salubrious evening where you can learn what is involved in each board position. There will be wine and cheese, and an offering of single malt Scotch. The event will be held Monday, September 17 at 7:30 P.M. Please call me, Paul Fydenchuk, at 819-827-4237 or email pastcommodore@gryc.ca if you are interested. I look forward to seeing many of you there. - Paul Fydenchuk

- Boat Repairs Available
Do you have a boat that is in need of extensive TLC before it sails again? Do you have parts that you need installed on your boat? Do you have a leaky boat that you want to be dry? Would you like to have end-of-season maintenance including wash/wax, wooden rail refurbishing, line replacement, etc? Would you like to hire someone to do the work for/with you? If you answered "YES!" to any of these questions, you may want to consider hiring a skilled individual with extensive boat repair experience to work on your boat on-site at the GRYC or in your garage/driveway.
Club Manager Neil will be working for the club on weekends only after Labour Day and will have time during the week throughout this Fall to offer his expertise and skills. To arrange an assessment, quote, and/or a repair/installation for your boat, email neil.rask@gmail.com or call 613 220-4328.

If you haven't made it to a Club Night yet, this is your last chance. Enjoy a great dinner with other members as the sun sets over the hills. If you can, please bring your own plate and cutlery and a bag to throw them in afterwards so that you can take them home to wash. It saves on clean-up at the club and ensures that you get a plate that you like. Note that the Pram races have been cancelled for this event.
- Pentathlon - Saturday, August 26, 1:00 pm
Note change of time! This is the Fourth annual multi-event race. Teams compete in a series of challenges and puzzle their way to the finish line. Award ceremony will follow. Come at 1:00 pm with a team, part of a team, or on your own and we'll put teams together on site. Things to bring (if you have them): Lifejacket, paddle, bathing suit, running shoes, team spirit!
- Moonlight Madness - Saturday, August 26, 9:00 pm
An historical GRYC event is being revived this weekend. All sailors are welcome to join in a moonlight race followed by a corn boil. Rig anytime from 8:00pm onwards with skippers meeting at 8:30pm and race starting at 9:00pm. Racers must bring a life jacket and flash light. Boats and marks will be identified with flashing "neon" sticks which will be supplied to each boat. We are close to a full moon and visibility on a clear night should be excellent. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
This will be followed by GRYC Moon Light Madness Corn Roast Social for all sailors and non-sailors. Starting at around 10:00 pm fresh local corn and hot chocolate will be served on the deck under the moonlight. And bring your LP's! We will have a turn table and speakers ready to roll to play whatever dusty old LPs you can dig up out of storage!
Note that these events are weather dependant - see the calendar on the GRYC home page for last minute changes. For any questions concerning the event please e-mail Geoff Erskine at joerskine@sympatico.ca.
No scheduled events. The clubhouse and facilities will be open. Come for a leisurely sail and/or a picnic lunch and enjoy the peaceful solitude of the island.
- GRYC Junior Program 2007 Wraps Up
The Junior Program finished up last week with their annual grand finale at the Junior Awards Banquet. Many thanks to our instructors Vincent Dupuis, Kate Bobyn, and Léo Landry and Program Director & Instructor Thomas Yeo for guiding our up-and-coming sailors throughout the summer. We wish them all the best in their studies over the Fall & Winter. Thanks also to our Youth Committee who have worked tirelessly since the river was solid ice and the island covered in snow.
- Family Fun Regatta
Four boats braved the heavy wind on Saturday for the Family Fun Regatta. Janey Crook guided the boats around the course allowing for Jaime & Jennifer Erskine with cousin Chris to successfully complete the circuit. Kudos to the Gray boys as well as Ingrid & Alex Felso for making a valiant effort!
- Yo-Ho-Ho Big Boat Race
Five pirate vessels set sail on Sunday to Banana Island for the Yo-Ho-Ho Big Boat Race. With the help of parrots, Jolly Rogers, bums, and a touch of rum, fun was had by all. Congratulations to Warren Place and mighty pirates for taking the lead after corrected time. For details see the Race Results. Paul Fydenchuk & Beth Macfie sped onto the course to catch up with the other boats. Very sportingly, Paul self-reported that his engine MAY have played a significant role in catching up and graciously suggested a DSQ for himself - Perhaps they'll roll out of bed a bit earlier next race. Photos of this event will be posted shortly on the GRYC Photo archive.
- Richens Point Plaque
Thanks to Charles Deschamps for building a very attractive stand for the Richens Point plaque. Come and see the creative work and join Al at the point for the area's best source of local history.

Special recognition to our Juniors who raced valiantly this past weekend: Paul & Sam Place, Michael Crook, Jamie Erskine, and Scott Goodman! For complete results, see the posted Race Results.
- Gatineau River quality testing - July
The second of three days of water testing for the 2007 summer season was conducted on Monday, July 30nd. In Chelsea, the water quality at the Farm Point Community public dock showed an "A" rating as did the Cascades Club water front, and the Burnet Rd. access point. Tests at the Gatineau River Yacht Club indicated a strong "A" rating as did the water at the Tenaga Property Owners' Association Beach. At the Club FOG did 6 tests. All were 'excellent' including two samples done in the north bay opposite the laser dock, two in the swimming area and two south of the boat docks. These results indicate that the Gatineau River is excellent quality recreational water.
During testing, FOG did not visually identify any evidence of blue-green algae blooms on the Gatineau. This is probably due to the continual flow of the water in the Gatineau. For more information on cyanobacteria consult the reference document provided by the Ministère du Développement durable de l'Environnement et des Parcs which can be found at www.chelsea.ca/_files/guide_000.pdf (French) or at the Health Canada site. In undertaking the tests, FOG respects the standards established by the Québec Ministry of the Environment.

Email manager@gryc.ca if you're intending to join the party.
- Ladies Pink Sail
What a spectacular wind us lucky ladies had last Saturday for the annual pink sail event. After all the rain of the day before the day was just picture perfect. A total of four sail boats, three kayaks, one canoe, one row boat and the trusty crash boat set forth from the GRYC for the Hennesy dock just a little way up river around the first bend. The wind was blowing strongly from the north which made getting up river hard work for the boats with paddles, they had an easier time on the way home. The sailors of the group had a very exhilarating sail in both directions. Many thanks to Fiona and John for the use of their dock and lawn furniture - the little trampoline made a very attractive but somewhat wobbly table for all the delicious goodies - what a beautifully peaceful spot. - Janey Crook.
Pictures can be found at www.pbase.com/gryc. Contact Neil manager@gryc.cafor the password. - Summer Series II
A record number of boats participated in this past weekend's dinghy race. 15 boats raced in variable winds and under sunny skies. Paul Place sits at one point ahead of Sophie Wolvin and guest sailors Simon & Oliver Noel are close behind. We hope to see all and more sailors for the regatta August 4-5! Thanks to our race officials and crash boat operators for running the races.

Alex has identified three urgent problems to rectify - the lower level rot beneath the kitchen door and in the substructure in that corner, the rot in the overhanging corner of the 2nd floor and support post, and the disintegration inside caused by the carpenter ants. A contractor has been identified to inspect the work immediately after the construction holiday.

- Gatineau River water testing results for July 2nd 2007
Friends of the Gatineau river (FOG) is a non-profit volunteer organization that is committed to the preservation of the Gatineau River watershed. FOG conducts water quality tests of the Gatineau River as a public service with support from the municipalities of Lapêche, Cantley and Chelsea and clubs and associations that use the river for recreational purposes.
The first of three days of water testing for the 2007 summer season were conducted on Monday, July 2nd. This first series of test results, based on over 70 samples from Farrellton to the Chelsea Dam indicated that the Gatineau River is excellent quality recreational water. In undertaking the tests, FOG respects the standards established by the Québec Ministry of the Environment . An "A" rating - excellent for recreational purposes, is between 0 and 20 coliforms per 100ml, "B" - good is between 20 and 100 coliforms per 100ml, "C" - acceptable is between 100 and 199 coliforms per 100 ml and "D" - not recommended above 200 coliforms per 100ml. Analysis is done by MicroB, a Québec government certified laboratory.
In Chelsea, the water quality at the Farm Point Community public dock showed an "A" rating as did the Cascades Club dock, and the Burnet Rd. access point. Tests at the Gatineau River Yacht Club indicated a strong "A" rating as did the water at the Tenaga Property Owners' Association Beach.
- Job List & Volunteer Opportunities
If you are interested in helping out with any of the following, contact Manager Neil at manager@gryc.ca or 819 827-2122:
Branch Hauling - Some trees have been trimmed and a few branches came down in the storms over the past couple of weeks. Branch piles need to be collected and moved to our brush pile.
Regatta Volunteers - see item #2. We will also need similar volunteers for the GRYC Invitational Regatta August 3-5. - Member & Community Notices
As many of you are aware, the Chelsea Pioneer Cemetery was vandalized this spring. The cemetery is maintained by the Historical Society of the Gatineau. The damage the mindless vandals caused to this historic site was substantial. To help pay for the repairs and restoration, the Historical Society is hosting a fund raising breakfast. The breakfast will be held at the Larrimac Golf Club, on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 from 7:30 to 9:00 A.M. Tickets are $25, and a tax receipt will be issued for the full amount. Our Provincial MLA Stephanie Vallée, and Federal MP Lawrence Cannon will be attending.
Please come out and support this effort.
BOAT FOR SALE
Do you find a Laser just a little too big and heavy to handle? Try a Byte...Think Laser, just smaller. Same lines and design, just 3 feet shorter, and about 40 pounds lighter. Easily fits on top of a car.
We have a 5 year old Byte for sale. Comes fully equipped with a standard sail and rigging, but also comes with something called CII sail and rigging for racing. Very cool see-through sail with bright orange trim...all the bells and whistles, including sail bags, a dolly to wheel it around effortlessly, and a cover. Excellent shape, everything in perfect working order and racing condition. Great little boat for the kids or smaller adults who want all the excitement and fun of sailing / racing, but aren't quite ready for a Laser.
We paid $5,500 for it last year. We'll let it go for $5,000. A new one with all the gear this one has costs double. Call the Crapper / Roscoe clan... 827-1782 or 827-5599 or email: davecrapper@genesis-research.com.

The board has appointed a sub-committee to review the prioritization process that leads to the offer and acceptance of new membership. The committee is to recommend if there is a need for further policies, procedures and criteria for selection to augment the present process, for which the only guidelines are the by-laws. The committee has the mandate to make formal recommendations to the board by the end of the summer season.
The membership at large will be canvassed and their feed-back solicited; however, the Board would like the sub-committee currently composed of two Board members to also include one or two non-Board members. We request that members interested in serving on this sub-committee indicate their interest to the Vice-Commodore via the Club Manager (manager@gryc.ca or 819 827-2122) within the next week so that we can finalize the committee soon and get going with our analysis and recommendations. If you value the mission statement of the club, we strongly urge you to volunteer to help us enhance the process.
- Job List & Volunteer Opportunities
If you are interested in helping out with any of the following, contact Manager Neil at manager@gryc.ca or 819 827-2122:
Hammering - Nails on the docks & catwalk have a tendency to creep up throughout the season. If you're looking for an easy way to get some volunteer time, grab a hammer and start bashing those nails back in. Speak to Neil if this is something you would like to do.
Roof Shingling - thanks to the work crew who did a great job leveling out the locker shed and repairing the roof. There is a corner that needs shingles. If you have any spare tar paper lying around at home and/or you have some time to hammer on a few new shingles, your help would be appreciated.
Branch Hauling - Some trees have been trimmed and a few branches came down in the storms over the past couple of weeks. Another easy task to hauls a few sticks to the brush pile.
Sand Hauling - There is a pile of sand at the bottom of summerlea. There is a wheelbarrow and a tetherball pit in need of sand on the island. Help is needed to load the sand into the wheelbarrow and haul it into the tetherball pit.
Regatta Volunteers - see item #5. We will also need volunteers for the GRYC Invitational Regatta August 3-5. - Notices
Swimming Ladder - our regular swimmers have requested that if you're the last one out of the water to raise the wooden ladder at the end of the swimming dock. This prevents the build-up of that slippery algae.
General Labour - Local cottager looking for part-time help for squirrel proofing cottage and other odd-jobs. Ideal youth employment opportunity. Call Wally at 613 829-2262 if intetested.

The Learn to Sail Program continues this Saturday from 1-3 pm with "Sailing Basics". A brief review of rigging and a brief instruction on the basics of sailing will be covered before heading out on the water. No previous experience necessary. Please bring a lifejacket and clothes that can get wet (capsizing is always a possibility). Arrive early to get started on rigging so that we can spend as much time on the water as possible. Pre-Registration is not necessary, however if you are planning on coming, or if you have any questions, please let Neil know at sail@gryc.ca.
- Canada Day "I AM Canadian" Big Boat Race - Sunday, July 1, 10:30 am
The Big Boat Race series continues with the second of six races. Big Boats race to Banana Island and back then challenge their taste buds in a Canadian pastime. Race begins at 10:30 am sharp. Skippers meeting at approximately 10:00 am.
- Canada Day at the GRYC
While nothing is planned officially, the clubhouse and facilities will be open as per usual. Join other families for a swim, sail, paddle, and/or BBQ before, after, or instead of heading into the downtown throngs or people.
- Neighbourly Cooperation
The summer has barely begun and we have already had altercations between members and neighbours.
It has always been the position of the club that we be as cooperative and accommodating to the neighbours as reasonably possible. We are actively fostering a cooperative relationship as we see nothing to be gained by a different approach. There are three specific areas that require the most cooperation and compromise.
(A) speed of driving on Summerlea;
(B) Noise;
(C) ParkingIf, as a member, you have any suggestion pertaining to the above three areas, we encourage you to write to the Board and provide the Board with specific recommendation for improving existing practice. You ideas are always welcomed and appreciated.
Noise and Swimming - Important!
Members are reminded, for the sake of our neighbors to please monitor and minimize the noise level (screaming children at boom, docks and rocks) especially in the evenings. For those unaware, Chelsea does have a noise By-Law and while many members may feel we have a right to have 'fun' in the water, our neighbors have rights as well.
Chelsea Municipal By-Law: Section 3 Noise: 3.3
It is not permitted, at any time, for anyone who occupies a building or a property or is in a public place or on public property to make or allow excessive noise to be made by persons under his authority, either by singing, yelling or with a radio, an amplifier or similar equipment or with any other instrument or object projecting noise or sounds in such a way as to adversely affect the well being and tranquility of a person or persons in the vicinity, unless a certificate of occupation for a temporary use has been issued by the Municipality.
- Facilities
Big sand event! The Club will be receiving a delivery of sand at the end of Summerlea on Tuesday, July 3 for the tether ball circle. We need volunteers for the sand delivery project. a.k.a. wheelbarrowing the stuff across the catwalk early next week, either during the day or in the evening. The club has one wheelbarrow, so if you have your own and can bring it, more that one person could haul at the same time. Please contact Manager Neil at the club 819 827-2122 or email manager@gryc.ca if you're interested and are available early next week.
Thanks to Scott Gibson, Doug Clancey, Alessandro Giuliani, Mike Lemay, Mark Wolvin and James Grimes for the exceptional piece of demolition of the side deck. For those romantics who felt that the old deck was a fine piece of backwoods Canadian wood art and did not need demolishing should rest assured that is was sufficiently rotted to have collapsed by itself within a year or so. Unfortunately there will need to be some assessment as to how to replace the deck so it may be some time before we have a new structure. Please watch this space for developments and don't wander out the kitchen door! If you're interested in helping with the reconstruction, contact Giles at facilities@gryc.ca.
Facilities is still looking for someone who has enough confidence in his or her electrical skills to take on some minor electrical projects (new light fitments etc.) Please contact facilities@gryc.ca or manager@gryc.ca ASAP.
LOST, STOLEN or STRAYED: the Club skill saw would like to find its way back to the tool shed, should anyone know of its whereabouts.
- Canteen Helpers Needed
The Junior program requires a couple of helpers for canteen. Responsibilities would include opening canteen, selling candy, counting inventory, and locking up. Canteen opens at approximately 12:00 - 1:00 pm weekedays. If interested, contact Neil at manager@gryc.ca. Great Opportunity for our GRYC youth looking for things to do this summer.

The Saturday Learn-to-Sail Program starts this weekend with "Boat Basics" at 1:00 pm. If you're interested in learning how to sail or want a refresher on knots & rigging, this is the session for you! This weekend will be land-based covering the four main knots used in sailing and rigging a club Laser and Squadron. No experience necessary. Registration is not required, however please arrive by 1:00 pm so that we can start on time. If you have any questions about this or any of the learn to sail program, call Neil at the club at 819 827-2122, email sail@gryc.ca, or see more on Learn to Sail.
- Sailpast & Strawberry Social - Sunday, June 24, 1:00-5:00 pm
This Sunday is the annual Commodore's Sailpast. This event, full of pomp and ceremony, is shared throughout the sailing world paying tribute and respect to our commander and chiefs. At the GRYC we follow this tradition with flags and sails flying, then add our own special touch with an all-out battle of aquatic proportions. Vessels of all shapes and sizes are welcome and encouraged to participate and bowing out before the water flies, while undoubtedly will be scorned at the time, is perfectly acceptable. All this is followed by a feast of delicious strawberries and toasts to and from our Commodore.
1.00 pm. - Rig your boat (sail, canoe, kayak, wind surfer - all welcome); dress yourself and your boat with flags and such, and ready appropriate armament in time for the actual Sail Past. 1:30 pm - Skippers meeting. At least one representative from EACH BOAT MUST BE PRESENT to receive orders of the day.
2:00 p.m. - the Sail Past. Participate in any vessel including sailboats, canoes & kayaks, or enjoy the festivities from the relative safety of the island. The Commodore will be marooned on a raft somewhere off Lighthouse Point. Boats rally upriver at a designated mark, and then sail past in an orderly fashion, gravely saluting the commodore to show her honour. Then everyone circles around and lets the commodore (and apparently her guard) have it with whatever non-lethal water-based weapons that can be mustered.
4:00 p.m. Champagne and strawberries. Whether you manage to make it onto the river or not, come join fellow members to toast the opening of the 2006 sailing season on the Gatineau river.Special note from our Commodore - Wanted: Body Guard(s). To help ward off and wage battle against the GRYC fleet. Interested parties to apply in writing to commodore@gryc.ca or call Patti at 819 827-1173.
- Junior Program 2007
Nothing says summer like the start of the Junior Program. The 2007 Junior Program will begin on Monday, June 25. Program Manager Thomas Yeo and his staff Vince Dupuis, Leo Landry, and Kate Bobyn are hard at work setting things up for another exciting season. A few notes and reminders regarding members and the Junior program:
1) With the exception of the Club Sandpiper, the Junior Program has priority over the use of the club boats between 8-4, Monday to Friday. If you would like to sail a club boat within these times, please contact Thomas at the club at 819 827-2122 to find out availability of the club boats. If you would like to go sailing around 4:00 pm, call the club ahead of time and it may be possible to have a boat left rigged for you.
2) While every reasonable effort will be made to minimize your disruption, the club house and docks will be used by the Junior Program at various times throughout the day. You may be asked to move from the pool area during swimming lessons.
3) We thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Any questions, comments, or concerns may be addressed to Commodore Patti Goodman, Manager Neil, or Program Manager Thomas Yeo. We would like to wish the staff, CITs, and participants a safe, fun-filled, and enjoyable summer at the GRYC! - Ice Breaker BBQ
From the Rear Commodore: Over 150 people turned up to welcome our newest members and to enjoy a fantastic feast. It was wonderful to see all the enthusiasm and spirit during the Saturday night Ice breaker event on June 16. Many, many thanks go to Anne Burbidge and Gonnie De Witte and their team of energetic volunteersfor making this a most memorable event. It was a pleasure meeting all the new families and welcoming them to the GRYC. - Brigitte Lemay - Rear Commodore
Congratulations to former Fleet Captains David Newing & Joe Dion as this year's winners of the "Virgin Sturgeon" award. Ask them about their nautical exploits which landed them this infamous catch.
- "Whiskey A-Go-Go" & Sail Jam '07
From the Fleet Captains: With great winds and a collegiate style race format, Sail Jam '07 was lots of fun. Seven quick races around a short course made for exciting starts and photo finishes. Our junior sailors were well represented by Chris Weller, Michael Crook, along with Tyler & Cal Gray. While Richard and Thomas Yeo were battling it out to lead the dingy race, big boat helms were working on bragging rights for winner of the "Whiskey A Go Go"- the first big boat event of the season. See 2007 Race Results for complete listing of the race results.
A huge thank you to World Exchange Plaza for sponsoring movie passes for the junior sailors and to Paul Fydenchuk for his expertise in arranging the "skill tasting" portion of the "Whiskey A Go Go". Lastly, kudos to Gord Hill and Bruce Lorimer for setting the courses and operating the Crash Boats. - Dan Gray & Geoff Erskine - Fleet CaptainsAnd from a sailor's perspective: On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning with a fantastic wind the dingy fleet waved "good by" to the big boats as they took off at break neck speed up river towards Banana Island. The dingies then started on their short one lap races. Fleet Captain Geoff was watching us with a beady eye from the motorboat and gently corrected and encouraged us all on various points of sailing. We certainly packed in a lot of starts - seven in all - by the time we spied David Newing in his new boat running fast before the wind barrelling towards the finish line.
Many thanks to the fleet captains for organizing this event which seemed to be a great success - it was really great fun having the dingies out with the big boats. The prizes for the juniors were a real bonus!!! - Janey Crook - Spring Series - Correction
Last week the Spring Series Results were posted with an error. We apologize for any inconvenience as a result of this mistake. The 2007 Race Results have been corrected and updated. Congratulations to our Spring Series Junior Champion, Paul Place!
- Wanted: Canteen Helpers
We are looking for keen, dependable, trustworthy, and candy-loving volunteers to help run the canteen for the Junior Program this summer. Volunteering as a canteen operator will count towards a family's volunteer credits and is an ideal opportunity for members aged 12-18 to gain experience in, what some would argue, a vital component of the Junior Program. Responsibilities would include: Selling candy, handling limited funds, tracking inventory, and setting up/taking down canteen. Help will be needed Monday to Friday, 12:00-2:00 pm, and may be extended to weekends as well. Applicant should apply by email to manager@gryc.ca or speak to Neil.
- Notices
The 2007 GRYC membership directory was distributed at the Ice Breaker BBQ. Ask Manager Neil for your copy on your next visit to the island.
- Birth Announcement
Nicki (Club Secretary) and Michael (last year's Rear Commodore) are very pleased to announce the arrival of Emily Sarah (6lbs 5 oz) and Christpoher James Henderson (6lbs 3oz) on Tuesday June 12th at 2:48 and 2:42 respectively. They came out screaming and they have been angels ever since. Nicky noted that "we are home now and figuring things out as we go!". We would like to congratulate the proud parents and warmly welcome in our newest (and tiniest) members!

- Youth, Guests, Parties and More...
Parents - Early summer is a good time to take a moment to ensure all family members understand the policies and privileges of membership.
While youth members, 14 years and older, are allowed to be at the club without an adult, they may not bring a non-member guest to the island without an adult family member present. The adult member is responsible for all family guests.
Parking - Members are responsible for ensuring all guests and their older youth (16+) know the parking rules and respect speed limits on Summerlea and surrounding roads.
Our neighbours - When using the GRYC during regular hours, have respect for our neighbors and fellow members. Keep evening noise in particular to a minimum.
Island Hours - With the exception of special club events, the Island and Club facilities are considered closed after 10 PM. The neighbors have been advised to contact the MRC Police if there is any late night noise or suspicious activity on the island. Those found on the island after 10:00 p.m. may be subject to trespassing charges.
Graduation and parties - this time of year the GRYC can be a magnet for late night swims and impromptu parties. The GRYC is not a late night party spot!
To our youth members - please advise your friends that Summerlea Road and the GRYC are private property. Do not be on the island after 10:00 p.m.
The Board thanks you for your assistance and co-operation. Any questions or comments can be directed to commodore@gryc.ca.

- Spring Series III - Sunday, June 10, 10:30 am
The Spring Series concludes with the final day of races this coming Sunday. If you haven't raced yet this year, this is your opportunity to shake off those winter cobwebs and get back on the water in fun-filled, friendly competition. Special note to Juniors (18 & under): so far we have yet to have any of you competing - this means there is a trophy with someone's name on it that is yet unclaimed. Merely showing up on Sunday in a boat will put you in immediate contention for this trophy. A special call-out to our successful Silver & Gold Sailors from the past few years: our racers need some more competition on the water... come show them how it's done!
- Rear Commodore's Message
"Ahoy all! All club events have been coming together superbly thanks to the many members who have stepped forth to volunteer their enthusiasm and expertise.
Mark your calendars: we will be welcoming many new families on Saturday June 16 during the Ice Breaker BBQ. Gonnie de Witte and Anne Burbidge will be facilitating the event and need your help. Come out one and all to give our new families a hearty GRYC welcome! Details available on the posters on the island and more info will follow in next week's bulletin.
Then I challenge all new families to help out on Saturday June 24 with the Commodore's Sailpast. Beth Mcfie will be at the helm at this event and she is looking for energetic and enthusiastic members to help with the formalities and the hijinks.
The first 3 Club Nights are nearly fully staffed so don't miss out on the fun! The sign up sheet is on the main noticeboard on the Island.
Finally, I would like to thank Marc Levac, Dave Maitland, Anne Burbidge and Nicki Paulun for their invaluable help on guiding me with this new venture that I have undertaken as Rear Commodore. It is truly a pleasure working with everyone to bring all the GRYC events and social activities to fruition." Brigitte Lemay rearcommodore@gryc.ca - Sailing Volunteers
Thanks to everyone who turned out for the Crash Boat operator's clinic on Saturday. Without the help of so many keen Boat Operators and Race Officials, we would be unable to run the myriad of sailing events throughout the summer. A reminder that if you would like to sign up to volunteer for any race(s) or sailing event(s), please call Marie Schingh at 819 827-1295 for Crash Boat or Pat Curry at 819 827-2953 for Race Officials. The season is quickly filling up, so call soon to get the date(s) you would like.
- Spring Series II
8 Boats set sail around the marks on Sunday. Congratulations to the day's leader, our Fleet Captain, Geoff Erskine. For complete results, see the 2007 Race Results on the GRYC site. A big "well done" to all those who participated and a huge "Thank You" to our Race Officials and Crash Boat Operators.
- New Facilities Jobs
Given the heavy rain lately, the control of run-off from the island is becoming something that needs to be addressed, especially along the well used path to the club house. If you have experience or are interested in this sort of thing please respond to facilties. An additional and related project is the deterioration of the bank on the right of the bridge going on to the island. This bank requires new reinforcing so someone handy with pick and shovel, 2x4 carpentry and rebar would be perfect. Also, the rehabiltation of the locker shed is proceeding apace, but there remains the the question of interior decoration. Is anyone interested in taking this on? See more on Job List.
- Items Needed
We are looking for handouts for some of our projects. If you have the following laying around at home without intended use or know where to get it free/cheap, please contact manager@gryc.ca or call the club at 819 827-2122:
- Roofing Shingles: Preferably black. 1 maybe 2 bundles is all we need.
- Sand: roughly enough to fill a sandbox (not our intended use, just an amount estimate) - New Members
Please welcome Alisa and Pierre Lafontaine and family (4 children) as the latest new family to join the GRYC.
- Friendly Reminders
No Smoking
The GRYC Island is a smoke-free zone. Please refrain from smoking anywhere on the island and docks. If you really need to, please go across the catwalk to the beach for a smoke break. This applies to guests as well, so please remind your guests of this and any other club policies. Thank you for not smoking.
Carry-on, Carry-off
Please take all your own garbage and recycling home with you. This includes, but is not limited to: beverage bottles & cans, food scraps, food wrappers & bags, etc. There are plastic bags by the door in the kitchen if needed. We are limited by the same municipal pick-up as any other house in Chelsea, so we don't have the facilities for garbage & recycling from 200+ members. Thank you for your continued support in this endeavour.
Dishes
You are welcome to use the club dishes, cutlery, and BBQ implements, however, please wash, dry, and put away anything that you use before you leave. If you see a dish or glass that needs washing while you are doing yours, feel free to wash it as well. Thank you for your help.

We also expect to see installed a speed hump beside the lemonade stand on Summerlea. Please respect the residents' request for low speed in this area. - Bridge Down 2007
This coming Saturday, May 5, is the annual Bridge Down, rain or shine. This is an all-hands-on-deck event where members help bring the island out of its long winter's nap and get things ready for the quickly approaching summer. The following information is a brief run-down of the day. For all new members from last year, and as a reminder to all returning members: as many members and their families as possible are expected to attend. A lot of work has to be completed and, especially in the case of hauling boats, many hands make light work! It's a great way to catch up with fellow members and a chance to meet and interact with members that you may not yet have had the pleasure to. After a morning of hard work, all participants are rewarded to a hearty lunch and an opportunity to shoot the breeze, and not to mention starting on your volunteer credits for the season!
One item to note is that the soup served this year will be the reintroduced "GRYC Glop". Please bring enough canned or dry soup to feed the number of people you are bringing. The soups will be combined to make a unique 2007 GRYC Potage that is always a sensory sensation! ( No really, it tastes much better than it sounds!)
The starting time for Bridge Down is 9:00 am sharp, with the exception of Dock Crews. If you intend on helping with docks, please arrive by 8:00 am.
When you arrive at the island, please check-in at the table at the entrance to the island. The volunteer log-book will be ready for you to sign you and your family in. You will then be assigned an area to help out with, then you will report to the Board member or project leader responsible for that area who will assign you a task. When you have completed your task, the project leader will assign another task or you can return to the check-in desk to be assigned to a new area.
When all tasks have been completed, and not before, lunch will be served.
The following is a list of the areas and their project leaders/Board Members:

If you come across any errors, dead links, or have any suggestions, please email communications@gryc.ca. And now for this week's tip:
The 2007 GRYC calendar is available on the GRYC Web site in several formats. The most prominent is the online calendar on the home page which uses the Google calendar feature. Note that all changes or updates to events will appear here first. The calendar can be viewed in agenda format (default) or by month. Click on "Activities" for a larger display of this calendar. If you have any question about an event, consult this calendar first and click on the event in question. A description and relevant notes about this event will be displayed. If you have a Gmail account and use Google Calendars, you can add the GRYC calendar to your calendar. If you would like to sign-up for this service, speak to Manager Neil for more information.
The 2007 calendar is also available for download in PDF format as a calendar and as an event list (also included in your membership renewal package). These can be found on the 2007 Calendar page.

The GRYC Board, with the assistance of a number of Member volunteers, has been busy for the past months planning and preparing for the new season.
Please note that additional notices will be sent out as required until the commencement of the sailing season after which the weekly schedule of notices will resume. The following are the topics for this Communications:
