GRYC News and Notices - December 21

Seasons Greetings!

While the island is closed and boats are put away for another year, a number of GRYC members did manage to brave damp and cold weather to participate in the 2006 Annual General Meeting.

  1. AGM Update - Your New Board

Those who were able to attend the GRYC Annual General Meeting on November 30th approved a balanced budget, made clarification changes to the by-laws regarding membership definitions and criteria for ranking the waiting list, and participated in lively discussion about the maintenance of the current GRYC fleet, membership initiation fees and island/club house improvements for 2007. (Minutes available in the New Year)

The 2007 GRYC Board of Directors:
    Commodore: Patti Goodman
    Past Commodore: Paul Fydenchuk
    Vice Commodore: Joe Dion
Fleet Captains: Dan Gray / Geoff Erskin
    Secretary: Nicki Paulun
    Treasurer: Jean François Coté
    Facilities: Gilles Morrell
    Communications: Erik Rask

    Vacant Positions:
    Youth Program Director
    Rear Commodore

  2. Calling all members - filling vacant positions

To maintain the active, vibrant club we have all come to enjoy, the vacant positions on the Board must be filled. There are no shortages of volunteers willing to work on the social committee and the youth committee, but the club is in need of members willing to take the helm and lead these committees! As leaders in these positions you do not work alone - in addition to your committee you are part of a supportive team - the Board.

If you have experience in program planning or working with youth, please consider joining the Board as Youth Program Chair. If you have a knack for organizing events, have a creative flair, or simply enjoy the many social activities the club offers, please consider joining the Board as Rear Commodore.

If interested, please contact the commodore, Patti Goodman at 819 827-1173 or email commodore@gryc.ca

  3. Merry Christmas!

The 2007 GRYC Board wishes you a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season. May the New Year bring you good health and smooth sailing!

GRYC News and Notices: October 19

Bridge up! Saturday, October 21: All hands on deck to put the club to bed for winter!

In this week's newsletter:
1. Reminder - Bridge Up change of Date
2. Boat Owners
3. Boat Storage & Lockers
4. Fall Colours Paddle
5. Le Gel

  1. Reminder - Bridge Up change of Date

Bridge Up will be taking place on Saturday, October 21 starting at 9:00 am, one week later than originally scheduled. As many members as possible are needed to help put the club and facilities to bed for the winter. A reminder that Bridge Up and Bridge Down now count as one credit each towards volunteer requirements revised in the spring.

Please bring work gloves if you have them and if you are planning to help with outdoor cleanup.

Lunch will be provided for all hard workers once everything is done. Work starts at 9:00, so get there early to help out.

  2. Boat Owners

If your boat is still in the water, please plan to make arrangements to haul your boat out by the end of this coming weekend, or latest by Friday, October 20. The boat ramp will be left open until then for your convenience.

  3. Boat Storage & Lockers

If you have a locker on the island and intend to renew it next year, feel free to leave NON PERISHABLE items in it. If you no longer wish to have a locker at the club, please empty it by Bridge Up so it can be reassigned early next season.

Canoes, Kayaks, and boats on the laser racks can be left where they are AT YOUR OWN RISK. The GRYC is not responsible for lost or damaged property.

Boats that are left in the water during the summer must be hauled out of the water. If you have the means, it is preferable, and in your best interest, to store them at home, however, some dinghies may be stored on the island (please provide your own tires if you have spare tires at home as we need quite a few to store club boats) and there is limited space in the parking lot to store Big Boats. If you plan to use club property to store your dinghy or Big Boat, please call the Manager at 613 220-4328 to verify your intended storage location.

  4. Fall Colours Paddle

On Sunday, October 1, a few hardy souls became one with the water. Those paddling southward from Wakefield and the Cascades Club glided down the Gatineau River through an uneven rain to be greeted by enthusiastic throngs of well-wishers lining the riverbanks and the catwalk of the GRYC. Though low cloud cover made grey the predominant colour of the Fall Colours Paddle, mild temperatures guaranteed that the spirits of the participants were not dampened.

Though not likely the last paddle of the year for those who did the event, it was a memorable morning. For those who were unable to attend, it is recommended that a final go-round on the river take place before canoes, kayaks and sailing craft are retired for the winter.

As for next year's Fall Colours Paddle, an order of sunny weather has already been submitted.

    James Grimes

  5. Le Gel

Le Gel - final official sailing event of the 2006 season

What a simply glorious day on the water with the leaves just over their prime but still looking quite spectacular. The sun... after all the wet sailing days that we have had was soothingly warm in a beautiful clear blue sky - good shorts weather on the 8th October!!! What a treat.

After a little discussion as to which direction to head, there were some of us who thought that it would be fun to sail down river towards the dam but it was decided, by majority vote, that Banana Island beckoned.

We had fair but not huge winds going towards Banana Island and had a very pleasant broad reach/run up. Just short of the island David decided that we should drop anchor and feast on goodies and beer which we did on Muriel's very comfortable and capacious boat. Unfortunately there were only two boats that were able to take part in the lunch flotilla - a very good time was had by all.

The wind got up for the beat back to the club - it was a truly lovely sail and just a great way to spend a late summer day on the water.

9. Close the Gate!

  1. Last Weekend's Racing Results

The Family Fun Regatta last Saturday was somewhat hampered by a small turnout and equally small wind, but those who came had a good time. Lack of wind meant that the Jackson Trophy and Rosie Pantz were postponed until further notice -- possibly Sunday, September 3. Stay tuned for next week?s bulletin for more information.

The First GRYC Team Racing was held on Sunday. Three teams of threee lasers battled it out in good wind. Despite a light drizzle and colder temperatures, a good time was had by all. Results will be posted at the club.

  2. The Absolutely Brilliant Final Club Night and Pram Regatta: TONIGHT!!!

If you haven?t made it yet, this is your last chance to attend a GRYC club night. Dinner served at 6:30. Pram races for the young and young-at-heart in the bay from 5:00-6:15.

Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm. Cost: $5 per member, $3 children 10 & under, and $8 for non-members.

  3. Pentathlon Rescheduled to September 4

The Pentathlon originally slated Saturday 26 August will now be combined with the Sail-O-Rama and GRYC 44th Birthday festivities on Labour Day, Monday September 4. Five activities will be included in this event: running, canoeing, paddling a surfboard, swimming, and sailing. Teams will compete for Ironman Champion 2006. Stay tuned for more details in next week?s bulletin.

  4. Big Boat Racing, Sunday August 27

The ?Irish Whiskey? Big Boat Race will be held this Sunday. This the fifth big boat race of the season will start at 10:30 am with Skipper?s meeting at 10:00 am.

  5. Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!

Volunteers are needed for the Last Club Night! Call Neil, or come early wearing an apron (optional).

Duty Officers for the Fall Shoulder Season

As you know, after Labour Day the Club reverts to shoulder season hours of operation. The Manager will be on duty only during the weekends, and the clubhouse will be closed throughout the week. In past years, this meant that members were out of luck if they wanted to use the club house to change for an afternoon swim or to enjoy a BBQ during a beautiful Fall evening.

This year, on a trial basis, we are instituting the role of Duty Officer, who will be issued a clubhouse key, and will be responsible for opening and locking up the club house and conducting minor facilities checks such as toilet paper and paper towels. This is a great opportunity if you are still looking for volunteer credits.

If you?re interested in serving as a Duty Officer this Fall, please contact the Manager, Neil, at manager@gryc.ca or call the club at 819 827-2122 for more information.

  6. Jobs Well Done

A well done to everyone who worked on the Junior Program Banquet, particularly Laura Massie, Marjorie Wiebe and all the Youth Committee.

Special thanks to Paul and Mary. Without them, club night would not be the success that it is!

  7. Junior Program Banquet Completes a Successful Season

The Junior Program concluded the 2006 season with the end-of-summer Banquet on Friday. A great time was had by all. Thanks again to the Junior Program Instructors: Roma Czop, Vincent Dupuis, Thomas Yeo, and Program Manager Bronwyn Pritchard for a great program this summer!

  8. GRYC Trophies & Awards

If you have any Trophies or awards that you won last year, please return them to the GRYC at your earliest convenience. Also, if you have information about any trophy or trophies at the club, (ie. where they came from, what they were originally awarded for, who donated them) please send an email to Neil at manager@gryc.ca.

  9. Close the Gate!

A reminder: close the gate as you come to and leave from the club, particularly in the coming weeks when fewer people are using the club.

GRYC News and Notices: August 8

Up Front:

The gate combination changed a few weeks ago. If you still don?t know the new combination, contact the Manager at 613 220-4328 or manager@gryc.ca.
Please close the gate after you. It should only be left open while the camp is running, or on big club events where many non-members are expected. When you are coming or going from the club, please remember to make sure the gate closes behind you.
Children under 14 should be supervised at all times, especially when swimming or sailing. If you have a crew out on the river, watch them sail from the lighthouse. If you have kids swimming to the boom, you should be at least on the rocks, but preferably on the island where the boom attaches.
NO SMOKING on the island or any club property. This includes the catwalk, docks, back deck, rocks, etc. Please butt-out or take a walk to the bottom of the road if you get the urge. Feel free to ask others who are smoking on the island to stop. Chances are they don?t know the rule.
Please remember to keep the Tool Shed clean and tidy, and return tools when you are finished with them. These tools belong to all of us, and if they?re lost or not returned, replacing them will cost all of us unnecessarily.

Attention all big-boat owners! The first annual Sandpiper Regatta will take place this Saturday. The morning will be a series of races around a course, while the afternoon will feature a race to Banana Island and back. Two classes: Sandpipers and Others.

  7. Learn to Sail Saturday, August 12

The final learn-to-sail will take place this Saturday August 12 from 1-3 pm. Come early to get rigged up so that we can get as much time as possible on the water. This is an open clinic, so we?ll cover anything you would like to review, from knots to capsizing to points of sail and sail trim. We will also run a couple more practice races to gear you up for the Family Fun Regatta next weekend.

Angels have undoubtedly written the names of GRYC volunteers in a book of gold, but unfortunately, they won't show it to mere mortals like the Board, who need to know that you've done your duty. So if you've done volunteer work for the club, even if your name has appeared in this section of the newsletter -- and especially if it hasn't -- SIGN YOUR NAME in the volunteer book!

Ontario workers get a holiday on Monday. Camp will still be on, but if there are boats left over, feel free to come and use them. Check with the Junior Program staff before you do. All the club facilities will be open for business as usual.

  10. Four Bronze Sailors Compete in Hudson Fruitbowl Regatta

Our club was well represented the week before last at the Hudson Fruit Bowl where 4 of our junior sailors competed during a glorious 4 days of sailing. The event included 2 days of technical and race training, and was followed up with 2 days of competition that included over 100 boats. Congratulations to Sophie Wolvin, Thomas and Markus Giannini, and Noel Pritchard, who won the full-rig Laser competition...okay so there was only one other competitor in that event...but he won just the same. Great weather and a strong wind (very peculiar to our young sailors!) highlighted the event.

Thanks to the club for the loaning of the boats, to the Weber family for the loaning of the trailer, to Cal Pritchard for being brave enough to pull it all, to Marc Wolvin for being voted hardiest camper, to Liz Giannini who drove ahead to claim the best campsite ever, and to Thomas Yeo and Roma Czop, our Youth Program instructors, who initiated and saw through to completion this first ever racing event for these young sailors. As the team summarized it, "We were very happy to have placed at the top of the bottom five in our class!"

  11. Housekeeping Notes (No, don't skip this section!)

The Gate is fixed, and the code has changed. Please close the gate as you enter and exit. The gate should only be left open during large club events (Club Night, Regattas) and during Junior Program hours.

Tidy up the Toys! Please ensure you tidy up and put things away after using club equipment. Sails should be dried and folded, ropes should be coiled. If you?re not sure how something goes, ask someone for help or talk to the Manager. Lifejacket area available on the outside of the Pram Shed. Please hang them back up after use.

The club Sandpiper is available for experienced sailors to use. Before taking it out for the first time, you must be checked out by one of the Fleet Captains to give you the run down on the ins & outs of the boat.

Lifejackets and club boats: Lifejackets must be worn at all times when using club boats, including and particularly the motor boats. Do NOT use the motor boats unless you are volunteering for crash boat duty at sanctioned club sailing events. It's important that the boats live up to the words written on their sides: ?GRYC Safety.? The only time you might use the safety boats other than at club races is if there was an emergency on the water, AND you are qualified to use the boats.

  1. Last Sunday's Racing

The third race of the Big Boat Series was held on Sunday with steady, strong winds. A fantastic turnout of 11 big boats set record times racing to Banana Island and back. Racers placed in this order: Charles & Emmanuel Deschamps, David Newing & Joe Dion, Jos & Marylies Woods, Paul Fydenchuk, Stephen & Alison Woodley, David Maitland, Ian Tamblyn & Amanda Shaughnessy, Marc Levac & Jim Coderre, Muriel How & Crew, Tony & Donelda Lahey, and Mike Cook.

The next Big Boat Race will be Sunday, August 6 - the pirate-themed ?Yo-Ho-Ho? Challenge.

  2. The Third Club Night and Pram Races of 2006: This Wednesday!

Pram races will be held at 5:00 in the bay. Dinner will be served at 6:30. This week's feature is a POTLUCK DESSERT. Bake a pie or cookies, make a fruit salad, layer a cake, or stop by Freshmart on your way. Remember the carry-on, carry- off policy about garbage -- it includes club nights. If you can, please bring your own plate and cutlery, then pack them out in a bag. This saves on a lot of clean-up afterwards and helps out the septic tank.

  3. Summer Series II - Sunday July 30

Summer Series II - Second day of three days of dinghy racing. All are welcome.

Special call out to Junior racers: show what you learned at the Fruit Bowl!

Races start at 10:30 am sharp. Boats available first-come, first-served.

  4. Ladies Pink Sail

Last weekends Ladies Pink Sail was a resounding success. Despite the winds the ladies made their way to the Throops and enjoyed yet another cordon bleu lunch that was toasted with champagne and orange juice cocktails. Thanks to everyone who came out, and to Noha Fuad and Patti Goodman for volunteering to organize next year?s event!

  5. Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!

Tree Cutting - John Pomeroy will be felling trees starting Saturday, August 5 at 10:00 am sharp. He needs a crew of 3 to help him out. Having your own chainsaw and experience cutting down trees an asset. Contact him at 819 827-0379 if you?re interested. Rain date: Sunday, August 6.

Tree Clearing - After aforementioned tree felling, logs and branches will need to be cut and cleared. This is an advance notice for volunteers with chainsaws and axes. Firewood will be available first-come, first-served with priority given to tree clearers.

Club Nights still need helpers. Sign up on the sheet on the notice board or call the club at 827-2122 to volunteer for a Club Night. Dates still needing helpers: August 2, 9, 16, 23. Jobs: BBQ & Serving.

Race Officials and Crash Boat Operators needed for sailing events. Call Caryl Green at 827-4502 to volunteer as a race official or Bruce Lorimer at 613 241- 2546. Many dates available. Check calendar to choose one or call to find out available spots.

CLUB NIGHT COORDINATOR NEEDED: The Johannsens will be away the week of August 9. Club Night that week needs to be coordinated by someone else. If you?re interested, call Mary at 827-2078 for more information.

  6. Jobs Well Done

Many thanks and congratulations to the following stalwart members:

The Erskine Family for painting the lighthouse

Maureen Fehr & Tyler Gray for painting the race shed.
Peter Goodman and Mike Tobalt for sanding and staining the picnic tables.
All the members who helped out with last week?s Club Night!
Donelda Taylor-Lahey for running the pram races last week.
Noha Fuad, Christine Faveri, Aidan O?Neill, Paul Landry, & Philippe Eveleigh for helping out with Sunday?s Race.
Nicki Paulun & Muriel How for organizing the Ladies Pink Sail.

  7. Learn to Sail Saturday, July 29

Learn to Sail Sailing Basics this week offers more on-water experience for novice sailors. If participants are interested, we?ll introduce race starts and some basic right-of-way rules.

  8. Photo Gallery

Photos are continually being added to the GRYC photo gallery. Recently the Regatta photos were posted. Have a look at www.pbase.com/gryc.

  9. Games for the Youth Program

The Youth Program is looking for donations of two-person and strategy games for rainy days and quiet moments. The program is looking for a chess game or two, a backgammon board, Connect 4, Hi Q, Chinese Checkers, Yahtzee and the like! (No missing pieces please!) If you have anything like this and would like to donate, please drop it off at the clubhouse with Bronwyn.

  10. Our Young Sailors on the International Scene!

From July 20-23, five GRYC Youth Sailors, competed in the 2006 Laser North American Championships held at the St. Margaret Sailing Club on St. Margarets Bay, 30 km west of Halifax, Nova Scotia. There were 62 competitors in the Laser (full rig) class and 65 in the Laser Radial class. Sailors from nine countries were represented including Canada, United States, Australia, England, Chile, Ecuador, Virgin Islands, St. Lucia and Bermuda.

GRYC sailors fared very well with Dominic McRae placing 34th (tied for 33rd), Katie Yeo 45th (tied for 44th), Sabina Weber 51st, Eva Applebaum 57th, and Jordan McGuire 62nd. Jordan retired after the second race of the second day having injured her knee. Sailors saw a dash of everything over four days of ocean racing: a crisp sunny day on Thursday with winds 12-15 knots, building as the day progressed, the remnants of tropical storm Beryl on Friday with winds of 20 knots building to 30 knots by the end of the last race with 3/4 metre waves, light and shifty winds on Saturday, and strong winds of 25 to 30 knots on Saturday with 1 metre waves and fog. The course was of Olympic size with 1.1 nautical mile distance to the windward mark.

  1. Last Sunday's I AM Canadian Big Boat Race: Excitement on the Gatineau.

Dave Maitland flew past Bernie Applebaum and Bob Milko to come in first overall. Bob and Bernie took second, while Jos and Marylies Woods made a great comeback from a late start to take third. Jim and Marc had a personal best by beating John Hennessey and not crossing the finish line in last place. All sailors apparently know their ales, as they all guessed correctly at the apres-race taste-test. Photos of this event will be posted on the GRYC Photo Gallery at www.pbase.com/gryc. Send an e-mail to manager@gryc.ca to receive the password.

GRYC News and Notices: June 27

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE: The boom has been moved, so that it is significantly farther from the dock - further than you can swim in time for a rescue. Parents: please be extra vigilant while your children are swimming to, at and on the boom. Make sure they know how much further it is. Watch them from the rocks, rather than just at long range from the dock.

Remember: children must be supervised at all times, especially when in or around the water. The motor boats and their dock are off limits to children unless accompanying an adult during an event.

Finally: be vigilant for children on the road to the landing. Do not reverse into laneways to turn around. And take it S L O W L Y up the hill!

  1. Last Sunday?s Sail Past and Strawberry Sunday - Was that wet, or what?

Commodore Paul Fydenchuk reviewed the fleet, resplendent in (from the head down) a Russian Naval cap, and Commodore?s jacket -- after which his elegant costume degenerated into shorts and sandals. After an orderly and well-mannered procession of boats large, small and hand-operated, there followed a major marine battle. The Commodore bested the Pink Panther (skipper, Chris Weller) in a hard-fought engagement, before losing a mano-a-mano contest with the two mighty, savage, amazon pirates Gillian Leahy and Emily Macfie, who unceremoniously chucked the Commodore into the river. (He claims he was just swimming after a beer offered by a passing boat.) In a later shore-based cannonade of Champaign corks, Paul wishes to claim three direct hits on Bruce Lorimer.

Did anyone catch creditable (or discreditable) action on film (or digitally)? If so, see 9, below.

  2. Canada Day (or Canada D?eh! As it appears on the Calendar)

A casual celebration, staring with pram/kayak/canoe races at 4:00 pm, followed by dinner, if you bring your own food and drink

Fireworks will light up the sky at dusk. (Bring $10 per family to defray the cost of the fireworks, purchased by Neil.)

  3. "I AM Canadian" Big Boat Race, July 2 10:30 am

The second of the Big Boat Races takes place July 2, with rigging at 9:30, skipper?s meeting at 10:00, and a 10:30 start. The usual suspects will gather afterwards on land for beer guessing - whatever that is.

  5. Jobs Well Done

Thanks to Sylvie Delisle for donating a large whiteboard to the Junior program, and to Al Richens & Jim Brown for donating sailing books.

A great many people whipped cream, prepared strawberries and served them to the intrepid mariners after the battle .er.Sail Past. So many, in fact, that each and every one of them should enter their own names with pride in the Volunteer Log, just outside the office. Don?t be bashful.

  6. Learn to Sail, Saturday July 1, 1:00-3:00 pm, rigging starts 12:30

Learn to Sail, July 1 from 1-3 pm. In honour of Canada Day, we?ll be having a simple open clinic. Neil will be on hand to help you with rigging, then we?ll cast off for supervised sailing. No formal instruction, but a crash boat will be on the water to help you, if needed. Call Neil at (613) 220-4328.

  7. Sandpiper Naming Competition

Now we have two entries in the sandpiper naming contest. Send your entries to sail@gryc.ca by June 30th. Don't forget to include your name, and if you're a junior member, your age. Your reasons for the name you choose are optional, but would be very interesting! The results will be published soon.

  8. Upcoming Events and Courses

A special Regatta notice will be sent out shortly with additional details for volunteers and participants.

The Wednesday Club Nights start July 12. Volunteers are needed!

GRYC Special Notice to Members June 22

Dear GRYC Members:

It seems the GRYC has become the late night party spot for area youth. The resulting noise, vandalism, illegal fires, littering, and theft have compromised the quality of life for our neighbors residing on Sumerlea, Williamson, and Chickadee Roads. Our neighbors have requested that the GRYC take action immediately to put an end to the unauthorized use of the GRYC islands and approaches.

The board is appealing to the youth of GRYC. PLEASE:

The GRYC is not a late night party spot!
Do not be on the island after 10:00 p.m.
Advise your friends that Summerlea Road and the GRYC are private property.
When you are using the GRYC during regular hours, have respect for our neighbors and fellow members.
Parents, please review this issue with your kids.

The Municipality and the MRC police have been contacted and asked to help develop solutions to the problem. The neighbors have been advised to contact the MRC Police if there is any late night noise or suspicious activity on the island.

Those found on the island after 10:00 p.m. may be subject to trespassing charges.

Please note that membership privileges may be suspended for failure to comply with club rules.

The board asks for your help and co operation in solving this problem.

Our hope is that all members and our neighbors can enjoy a pleasant summer on the river. There will be follow-up to this letter in the near future.

  1. The Icebreaker

A fine evening brought many members to swim, supper and celebrate the beginning of the Summer Season. Commodore Paul welcomed this year?s new members, (the Webber, Clancy and Erskine families) plus the families who joined after last year?s Icebreaker.

Fatima Martin, Wendy Pritchard and John Hennessy, all Board members who retired in 2006, were presented with Burbidge photos to recognize their contribution to GRYC.

Commodore Paul announced that the Hansom Transom award this year goes to Nicki Paulun and Micheal Henderson, for their unstinting and continuing contributions to the Club.

The annual Virgin Sturgeon award for spectacular if dubious achievement goes to Marc Levac & James Coderre, for their recent up-the-river-without-a-paddle marine near-disaster.

(The actual presentations of these two awards will be made at this coming Sunday?s Sail Past.)

  2. Last Sunday's Whisky-a-Go-Go Big Boat Race

    5. David Newing
    6. Muriel How
    7. Jos & Marylies Woods
    8. Tony Lahey
    9. John Henessey
    10. Yves Gingras
    11. Marc Levac & James Coderre

  3. The Commodore?s Sail Past: Sunday, June 25th

Old hands at this annual idiocy know that you need to be at the Club by 1:00 to rig, dress yourself and the boat with flags and such, and ready appropriate armament in time for the actual Sail Past at 2:00. The Commodore will be marooned on a raft somewhere off Lighthouse Point, awaiting his fate. We all sail past, gravely saluting to show him honour. Then we all circle around and let him have it with whatever non-lethal water-based weapons of wetness that we can muster. Then the day customarily degenerates into a running fight reminiscent of Trafalgar after Nelson had split the line. (Get David Newing to explain that last reference.) Keeners have been known to be still at sea, exchanging broadsides, long after the strawberries have been eaten and the champagne drunk - don?t let this happen to you! Oh yes: there will be non-alcoholic drinks for those who for legal or personal reasons do not participate in up spirits.

We still need some strawberry preparers, champagne pourers and cream whippers for this event. So if you want to be both helpful AND dry, contact Michael Henderson. (Now read ?Jobs Well Done? to understand how many hands make successful events!)

  4. Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!

Volunteers are still needed to prepare food, take tickets, cook, serve and clean up at Club functions. You can e-mail Rear Commodore Micheal Henderson at Henderson.mj@forces.gc.ca, and take your pick among upcoming events:

    the Sail Past (see above),
Wednesday Club Nights (starting July 12) and
The GRYC Regatta (July 8 and 9).
    Michael still needs an assistant!

  5. Jobs Well Done

You may be surprised to know that it took the combined efforts of more than 30 people to make the Icebreaker a success.

Most, if not all of them were: Ann Burbidge and Will Green (who organized and managed), and all those who contributed: Wendy, Cal, Matthew, Bronwyn and Megan Pritchard, Casey Cerson, Scott Goodman, Josh Moon, Captain Macaroni (aka David Maitland), John Crooke, Noah Fouad, Ingrid Wellmeier, Susan Sims, Janey Crooke, Muriel How, Genevieve Biron, Isabelle and Malcolm Roberge, Barbara Schultz, Tracey Gibson, Gonnie de Witte, Patti Goodman, Kate Stefanuk, Pat Etue, Jane and Blake Watson, Megan Roy, Sarah Hurman. There were so many people at work both above decks and below that we may have missed a few. If you know whose name(s) should be on this list, we do want to know! (communications@gryc.ca)

So now you know why Rear Commodore Michael needs more help for the Sail Past!

  6. Hands-on Crash Boat Clinic - Saturday, June 24, 10:00 - 12:00.

Practice using the club motor boats (starting, driving and caring for the boats; setting and recovering buoys; righting capsized boats; towing and (most important) rescuing people from the water). Bring and wear your life jacket. You must have a Boat Operator's card to drive any club motor boat, but anyone can ride as assistant crash boat operator. (Don?t confuse this session with the Boat Operator?s Certification course, which is coming in the near future.)

  7. Learn to Sail, Saturday June 24 1:00-3:00 pm, rigging starts 12:30

The Adult Learn to Sail course continues with hands-on training, free to all members. This time, you might get a little damp, so wear your life jackets and suitable clothes for the event - maybe a change afterwards, too? Please arrive at 12:30 so that we can review the finer points of rigging, and get as much sailing as possible before 3:00 pm.. If you have questions, please call Neil at (613) 220-4328.

  8. Sandpiper Naming Competition

So far, only one suggestion has been offered for the club sandpiper?s name. Not to detract from the excellence of that entry, but it would be interesting to have more to choose among. Send your entries to sail@gryc.ca by June 30th. Don't forget to include your name, and if you're a junior member, your age. 1. Reminder: The Icebreaker moves from the 10th June to the 17th June

In case you missed last week?s special announcement, the Icebreaker (aka the New Members BBQ) will take place on the 17 June. The reason behind this last-minute change is that many Club members have other commitments this coming weekend.

Our own Patti Goodman and Mark Wolvin are nominated as finalists for Coach of the year, Michael Henderson is in the Choir -- not to speak of all the people who want to celebrate our community on the Chelsea Days weekend. Rear Commodore Michael is still looking for volunteers to do either ticket sales, BBQing, serving and clean-up at the Icebreaker.

Michael and Nicki Henderson are on holidays from Friday June 9th to Tuesday June 20th inclusive, so if you have any questions during that time, contact Anne Burbidge (827-0724, lava@magma.ca).

    9. Jordan McGuire: 62

    Junior:

    1. Katie Yeo (11)
    2. Chris Weller (22)
    3. Scott Goodman (28)
    3. Jordan McGuire (28)
The points are scored overall; Juniors compete for a separate trophy. The three Sundays of racing are based on the best 5 of 9 races.

  3. Spring Series III - Sunday, June 11

This will be the third and final Sunday of the series. Races 7, 8, & 9 start at 10:30 sharp. Skippers meet at 10:00 am. Open dinghies (Lasers, Albacores, Bombardiers, etc) only. Club boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Overall series scores are based on your best 5 races out of 9.

  4. Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!

One more time for luck: Rear Commodore Michael is still looking for volunteers to do ticket sales, BBQing, serving and clean-up at the Icebreaker.

Looking forward: Club Nights require volunteers to prepare food, take tickets, cook, serve and clean up. These are all jobs for people who enjoy working together and interacting with the Club members. E-mail Rear Commodore Michael Henderson at Henderson.mj@forces.gc.ca.

Michael still needs a Co/Assistant Rear Commodore - a great way to learn the ropes of this important club function.

All current making, fixing, painting and cleanup jobs are spoken for. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered.

  5. Jobs Well Done

Giles Morrell, Sheldon Massie, and Jos & Marylies Woods ran the races this past Sunday.
Janien Grimes, Heather Gibb, and Marc Levac painted and stained the picnic tables and clubhouse floor.
Mike Lemay, Casey Cerson, Gary Fehr and Marc Wolvin fixed up the back deck.
Nicki Paulun & Michael Henderson acquired the new freezer and talked Sears into delivering the new BBQs, which Patrick & Christian Glorieux assembled.

  6. The Club is Under Way for the Season

Starting next week, the clubhouse will be open throughout the day. Please remember to tidy up after yourself, making sure to take everything home -- lifejackets, towels, clothes and especially garbage (including cans, bottles, bags, pie plates, and meat wrappers). Plastic garbage bags are available just inside the door of the kitchen.

Remember that the island and docks are closed after dusk. Municipal noise by-laws come into effect after 10:00 pm, and sound carries very easily and far over the water.

Now that people are swimming again, remember that there is no lifeguard on duty at any time. Children MUST be supervised at all times.

  7. Advance Notice of Courses and Training

The Adult Learn to Sail program starts Saturday, June 17th with Boat Basics, on land. Learn how to tie sailor?s knots and how to rig a Laser and a Squadron. Practical sailing starts June 24. No experience necessary. Call or email Neil (220-4328 or manager@gryc.ca) with questions or to register in advance.

Practical Crash Boat Training: Saturday, June 24 10:00 am. If (1) you have your boat operator?s card, and (2) you want to volunteer for crash boat duty during club events, but (3) you?ve never driven the club motor boats, THEN you need practical on-water training. The course includes starting, driving and caring for the boats; setting and recovering buoys; righting capsized boats; towing and (most important) rescuing people from the water. Bring and wear your life jacket.

    Upcoming Courses include:

    Boat Operator?s Card Certification,

GRYC Special Announcement

Greetings!

We don?t usually send you more than one e-mail each week, but this is an exception that involves a change to the Calendar as published on the club web site.

***The Ice-Breaker (the first social event of the season) is re-scheduled from the 10th June to the 17th June***

Why?

Well, it appears that there?s just too much going on that weekend. GRYC folks are involved in community activities such as Chelsea Days, which among other events includes the Castenchel choir, in which you?ll recognize a Rear Commodore. It?s also the weekend of ?Walk for a Cure? - a cause that many people want to support. And it?s also the first week of June, which means that sons and daughters, grandchildren and perhaps even great grandchildren are graduating.

So we?re holding The Ice-Breaker a week later. Same time: 5:00pm. Same place: the club. Same great idea: food, drink, merriment and the introduction of new members.

This Weekend
Upcoming Events
Bridge Down: Wet but Successful
Gate Combo has Changed
IMPORTANT: Boats & Lockers
Carry-On, Carry-Off
Volunteer Opportunities
How to Log Your Volunteer Hours
Local Events

  1. This Weekend

La Debacle River Cruise - Sunday, May 21

The first sailing event of the season. The monsoon season we seem to be having hasn't exactly inspired boat launching, but hopefully the weather will break long enough for a few of you to get down to the club this weekend to launch your boats.

Rigging starts around 12:00, cast off about 1:00 pm. All are invited. If you have a boat, we encourage you to launch it in time to join a pleasant early-season cruise upriver. Once the destination is reached, boats will form a flotilla where the beginning of the season will be celebrated. Big boats will be featured at this event due to the colder water temperatures, but all boats are welcome: dinghies, canoes, kayaks, etc.

  2. Upcoming Events

Race Officials and Crash Boat Operators Clinic - Saturday, May 27

If you're interested in volunteering this summer as a Race Official (point duty) or Crash Boat Operator at any Sunday Race, Regatta, or any other Sailing event, this information session is for you. The basics will be covered: running a race, completing the score sheet, setting buoys, and general responsibilities, and an opportunity for you to have your questions answered.

Potential Race Officials at 10:30 am, potential Crash Boat Operators (and assistants) at 1:00.

    Spring Series I - Sunday, May 28

The first Sunday Race of the 2006 season. Dinghies battle it out in the first day of 3 Sundays of the Spring Series. No racing experience necessary, but dress for the water temperature & weather.

Ice Breaker BBQ - Saturday June 10

Mark your calendars off. The first big bash of the season. Welcoming members old and new to the 2006 season. "How was your winter?", "Have you got your boat in the water yet?", and "What's your name again.?". A great time to catch up with good eats and good company. Stay tuned for more info

  3. Bridge Down: Wet but Successful

A huge "Thank You" to everyone who braved the torrential downpour last weekend. The island and clubhouse got it's annual Spring face-lift. We got rid of a couple of dilapidated BBQs and Boats, and cleared the debris Mother Nature dropped on the island over the Winter. The quick-thinking food crew pulled off a much-needed core-warming soup on top of the once-again spectacular lunch-spread. We all left soaked, tired, but happy with a job well done.

  4. Gate Combo has Changed

The new gate combo was given out at Bridge Down. If you couldn't make it then or have already forgotten it, contact the Manager (see end of email for contact info) or any member of the Board.

  5. IMPORTANT: Boats & Lockers

A reminder that as of June 1, any unclaimed lockers will have their locks cut and will be reassigned and unclaimed boats will be assimilated into the club fleet. If you're unsure of the status of your locker or boat, see below or contact the Manager.

Lockers: If you paid for a locker but a "?" appeared on your membership renewal form, you have not registered your locker. If a number appeared, then your locker has been accounted for and will be left untouched.

Boats: If you were issued a sticker last or this season (white sticker with GRYC insignia and number - no year) then your boat(s) has/have been entered into the database. The information for your boat(s) including location and sticker number should have appeared on your membership renewal form.

Contact the Manager (see end of email for contact info) if you have any questions about the boat and/or locker registry or to confirm your information if you are unsure.

  6. Carry-On, Carry-Off

We'll be sounding like a broken record throughout the summer, but here's the first reminder of many: if you bring it onto the island, please bring it home with you. At the beginning of last season the Gleneagle dumpster was removed. We are now restricted to the same garbage and recycling as any private home in Chelsea. As a result, we are trying to reduce the amount of waste generated at the club. Please bring any garbage and recycling that you produce home with you. This includes, but is not limited to: meat wrappers, corn husks and cobs, wine/beer/pop cans/bottle/cartons, napkins, chip bags, etc. If you purchase a beverage from the island's machine, it becomes your property, so please bring it with you. Plastic bags will be available in the kitchen and inside the clubhouse by the BBQs for your convenience. If you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT take a recyclable item with you, there is a recycling box outside the kitchen. If everyone does their part to help, the carry-on, carry-off policy is not a burden, and the island will be cleaner and happier for it. Thanks in advance for you cooperation.

  7. Volunteer Opportunities

Crash Boat & Race Official Coordinator

The Fleet Captains are looking for 2 to 4 volunteers to coordinate the Race Official and Crash Boat Operators schedule for the summer. The coordinator(s) will be busy at the beginning of the season recruiting Race Officials and Crash Boat Operators for the various sailing events and races throughout the summer, but once that's done it's 'clear sailing'. Coordinating will fulfill your volunteer duties for the season. If you are interested or would like more information on one of these positions, contact Fleet Captains Joe Dion 827-1321 or David Newing 827-2418.

    Assistant Rear Commodore

Michael Henderson needs your help! If you enjoy the social events at the club and would like to help organize/coordinate them, consider an assistant/co-Rear Commodore position. Call Michael at 827-2315 if you're interested. Position available immediately.

    Jobs and Tasks

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far. This season is off to a great start thanks to you.

Below is a list of tasks and jobs that need your help. If you're interested in helping with any of these, contact the Manager for more information.

Artist needed - If someone with any degree of artistic ability is interested in painting an outdoor mural depicting some sort of sailing-related scene, we need your help to paint the race shed that was built last year. Other ideas are welcome.

Lumberjacks - John Pomeroy needs 3 people to help cut down dead trees/branches on the island.

Carpentry - New shelves are being built in the kitchen. Light carpentry needed. Materials will be provided. Experience and own tools an asset.

Painting - The floors of the clubhouse and picnic tables are being repainted/stained. We have a few volunteers already (big thanks to Patricia Black who has us off to a great start) but we could still use a couple more brush-yielding helpers.

  8. How to Log Your Volunteer Hours

A revised volunteer log book is being put together and will be available soon. Along with your membership privileges, members have a minimal volunteer requirement each season. This updated system will endeavor to facilitate members to report their contributions to the club and avoid any unwarranted fines on your membership renewal next Spring. This log book will be kept outside the office by the phone. It will be your responsibility to update the logbook as you complete your hours. More information will be sent about the revised system, so stay tuned.

  9. Local Events

Chelsea School celebrates 50 years this weekend. Events are planned throughout the weekend with special note of the Musical Entertainment on Saturday from 1:00-5:00 pm. Our Commodore, Paul Fydenchuk along with Ian Tamblyn and a few other fellow GRYC members will be performing. Come for a BBQ lunch before 2:00 and enjoy some good tunes and old memories.

This space could be yours. If you have a news item or notice that you think other members would like to know about, send an email to the Manager with the info or a brief write-up to be included in the weekly News & Notices.

  6. Launching your own boats

Please wait until after Bridge Down to put your boat in the water. If you moor your boat on the catwalk, the boat ramp will be unlocked Sunday, May 7. If you have an Island Dock, please wait until the following weekend to launch your boat. From May 14 until May 28, the boat ramp will be left open for you to launch your boats. After that point you will need to contact the Manager to make arrangements to have the gate opened for you.
